On New Years Day 1850 Patrick McCarty (born 1828 in 'County Kerry') arrived off the mouth of the Mississippi on board the ship "Lord Sandow" out of Liverpool and Cork.  He checked in to the US Customs House in New Orleans the next day (document exists) and journied up the Mississippi on his great adventure.  He lived as a laborer on farms in Indiana and illinois, then married Anna Donahue in Madison, Wisconsin in 1855 (family oral tradition and documents).  After living in Wisconsin and eastern Iowa for some years, in April of 1881 he journeyed west to Emmet County in the 'wilderness' of Iowa to settle on his own homestead - arriving on 21 May (handwritten note by his son, Thomas, and photos of his frame farmhouse and family, ca. 1907).  He is my great great grandfather (Mother's Father's side, and I am very proud of this pioneer.  QUESTION: Can anyone identify where in Kerry Patrick McCarty came from?  Ed Weeden, weeden.et@gmail.com

  • Hi Ed, do you have patricks parents names? If so it may be easier to locate a baptism for him. Have a look at www.irishgenealogy.ie which has online baptism records for Kerry RC

  • Thanks for the rapid reply Frances!  No I don't have the parents names, but I do have a brother, James McCarty, born in 1826 who immigrated at the same time.  They farmed in nearby locations in 4 US states.  There is an oral tradition among these relatives in the US (relatives of James) that he married his wife Mary O'Sullivan in Ireland (but no trace of her name on the Lord Sandow pages I have . . . so I doubt this rumor).  I failed to note that Patrick's middle initial is 'J' - have no records with this middle name spelled out.  Again, thanks for your efforts. I am aware that things are just getting started with Kerry, because I've just completed a full tree for the O'Connors of Raharney, Westmeath - right back to where they were tenant farmers on the Grange More estate.  Fortunately for that family (my Mother's Mother's side) I had the parents of the immigrating boys.  With greatest thanks and respect - Ed Weeden

  • Ed check out www.nationalarchives.ie for Tithe Applotment & Griffith Valuation records

www.historicgraves.ie    All these would be helpful if you locate a baptism & get the fathers name for Patrick. Also keep in mind "Irish Naming Patterns" as Patrick may have had children called after his parents.  Kind regards Frances
