Looking for information about the parents of my husband's g-g-grandfather, Timothy Moriarty, born about 1818 in, we believe, Annascaul, Dingle, County Kerry. Emigrated to New York about 1853; a year later his wife Margaret (McCarthy?) came over with 5 children. An obit in the New York Herald mentioned Annascaul.

  • Hi Nancy,

Was it Brooklyn or New York City? I see 2 Timothy's that might fit that appear in the 1855 Census. I was researching the Moriarty's of Annascaul a few weeks ago, my grandmother was a Moriarty too! In one line, they had 20 children from which has sprung over 1000 third cousins. In addition to the very rich American records, we can take a look into the Annascaul Catholic Parish records which are now online at the National Library of Ireland, at http://www.nli.ie/en/parish-register.aspx but unfortunately in this case, we will not pick up Timothy's birth as the records start a fwe decades later. Griffiths Valuation of Ballynacourty, which encompasses this area, was done in 1852 though, just prior to your immigration date. Looking there I see 3 Timothy Moriarty's, in Ballinclare, Ballintermon and Brackloon. It might take a bit more scouring around to see which of these might be your Timothy.

  • Hi Jean,

The family lived in Brooklyn until a little after 1860 when the parents moved to Manhattan. We have pretty good records once they got over here to the US. I will look into the parish records you noted and see if I can find a marriage or births of children listed. Will also check out Griffiths. Thanks for the help and I'm sure you and my husband and his siblings are probably related!

  • Hi Jean and Nancy.  I am researching my g g grandmother, Mary Moriarty. She married John Evans from Minard East which is very close to Annascaul in the church at Lispol in 1841. I know nothing about her. Her son George Evans was born at Annascaul and the family attended Church at Lispole and still do so. George came to Australia in 1873 and his sister,  Mary went to America at the same time. The Evans still live on the same farm at Minard, I will be visiting them again in June.  Rosemary

  • Hi Rosemary - Let us know how your visit goes! I just got back again a few weeks ago. GLORIOUS weather in Kerry. I got lucky!

Nancy, I am working with a line of Annascaul Moriarty's right now. We believe there were 3 seperate lines there. I will see if anything turns up for Timothy as we go along!

    And thanks Martine! : )

  • Hi Jean,

Thank you so much for offering info on Timothy if it comes up.  We are all so interested in finding out more about our immigrant ancestor who started our American Moriarty line. Good luck with your research.  Glad you are having glorious weather -- we actually are having some of that in New York also -- Long Island, down by the ocean!
