My great-grandfather was Patrick J. Kelleher, born March 4, 1859, in Dingle, Kerry.  Patrick married Sarah Flannery in Iowa, USA, in 1888.  Patrick's father was John Kelleher, no birth, death or marriage information.

When did Patrick leave Ireland?  More ino about Patrick & his father John?

I located a March 5th 1859 baptismal record in Dingle for a Patrick Keliher born to John Keliher and Mary Sheehy. They lived in the townland of Imlagh. I found the record on www.irishgenealogy.ie Hopefully, the link below opens correctly.

  • Mr. McDonnell,

Thank you for finding this information. My question is: Have I been spelling the name of my ancestor incorrectly as "Kelleher"? Are you sure this is my relative? Also, if this is him, can you find anywhere when he immigrated to the USA? He died when I was 2 years old so I had no contact with him that I can remember.

Again, your help is much appreciated. We will be in Ireland on Sept. 14 & perhaps could contact you?

    Best Regards,

I'm sure this is your Patrick based on the date of baptism, mothers name and the location (Dingle). The spelling of names was very flexible in the 19th century and Kelleher is probably the most common but Keliher or Kelliher are variants. I would not be concerned.

You will have to rely on American immigration records to try to find out when and where Patrick came into the USA. You may want to try www.familysearch.org or www.ancestry.com  Ancestry usually has 14 day free trials.

I live in the States. Ironically, I will also be in Ireland starting September 18th for two weeks.

  • Dear Corngirl,

You and I are relatives.  Your Great Grandfather was my Great Grandfather's brother.  My Great Grandfather settled in Le Mars, Plymouth, Iowa.  I have pictures!  The family farm is still in Emlagh, Kerry, Ireland.  I have a public tree on Ancestry.com.  I would like you to contact me.  I am not sure if I can give you my email address through this forum, but here goes:
