Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in replying to your message.

Unfortunately, it may be difficult to find information without a more specific place of origin. Most Irish record sources- church records, land records, census records- are based on specific locations. Until you know a specific location within Ireland, preferably a parish or placename, it may be difficult to do anything more with these records.

Do you have any documentation pertaining to Anne and Richard and the family that mentions any place names at all? This can include wills, marriage/death records, census records, letters, diary entries etc. Have you tried searching Ancestry.com for any mention of your ancestor?s name in member family trees or messages? Ancestry is also hosting ?webinars? on their site. The latest focuses on how to use Irish records when you do not know where your ancestor is from.

There are some places where you can search online, however these websites do not have complete collections and many do not cover the period after 1900:

www.familysearch.org has a huge database of genealogical records including some church records for Ireland.

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/ have begun a project to upload Irish church records to their site free of charge. However, so far only Counties Dublin, Kerry, Carlow and parts of Cork have been covered.

No, apparently they married in America. But I am finding records that the family lived in Tralee. I did finally find Anne's parents: Edward Donnelly (the name is sometimes spelled Donnely) and Eliza Benner. Eliza's parents were Henry Benner and Ann Stephens. So I am making progress! We will be visiting in three weeks and I may do some poking around in Tralee. Any advice as to where I might go to search records? Thanks so much for your help.

Hi Julian, there is no time to lose.... to avoid disappointment contact the following immediately if your family were Church of Ireland (Anglican) as many Benners were. The C of I community was small so your couple may have married in Dublin or elsewhere.

If your family were RC, it is extremely unlikely that you will be allowed to see the paper records but you could always try by emailing the address below PRIOR to your arrival.

Sadly the main repository for all our records is in Dublin with Church records held at the National Library on microfiche.

I just joined Irelandxo today after someone in my genealogical society told me about it.  I am looking for Donnellys in Limerick and Kerry.  Anne Evaleen Donnelly is my great grandmother.  I see you now have found out her parent's names.  I have a lot of information on her ancestors...especially the Benners who were Palatine Germans who came to Ireland around 1709.  I have not been able to get any further back on the Donnellys...earliest ancestor is Michael Donnelly born around 1765, married Elizabeth Dunne.  I have some of my information on ancestry.com, familysearch and MyHeritage.
