My grandfather, George Decourcey Dodd, born approx 1885-89, was a twin (brother died in early childhood) and one of 18 children.  He was from Killorglin and immigrated to Canada around 1915-20 and settled in Toronto, Ontario where he married Ella Foley and had a son, George Delaney, my father.  His father owned a salmon canning factory situated closed to the local river.  His mother was from France.  Being one of 18 children means there must be tons of rellies out there and I'd love to find them.

Not sure I have the correct family but there is a son George whose age matches your information. The problem is the father was a doctor and the mother was born in Co. Kerry not France. Between 1901 and 1911 the father died and his son William (also a doctor) took over as the head of household. The family lived in Ballymacprior townland which I assume is just outside Killorglin. Let me know if this is your family.

By the way, I located two death index records for a William Henry Dodd in the Killarney registration district (which would included Killorglin). One if for a death in 1908 and the other 1909. (see below). You can write to the GRO www.groireland.ie  and ask for a copy of the death record for William henry Dodd who was from Ballymacprior. You need to fill out their form and provide the quarter/year of death (for both records), the registration district and the volume and page numbers. One record should cost around 4 euros

I saw your message that the family I found was the wrong family. For some reason, I can not locate your family in either the 1901 or 1911 census in the Killorglin DED. The only George in Co. Kerry is the one in Ballymacprior. Do you know the names of George's parents particularly his mother?

  • Hi Roger

I was just picking my mom's brain (my dad passed away in 2001) and discovered that George's father was in fact a doctor!  I only knew about the canning factory but apparently that was a family business.  So this might indeed be the right family and possibly it was George's grandmother who came from France.  My mom doesn't know what her name was and all I know is that she was a French Hugenot who left France because of religious persecution and came to Ireland.  This is very interesting.  Another point, there were 21 children, not 18.  The census only shows 5 so I don't know where the rest of them went :)

There was at least one set of twins, possibly more.  My dad had some letters from the family and my mom's going to try to find them.   That should shed a bit more light on things.

I'm glad we are on the right track. Between the 1901 and 1911 censuses, I can account for 11 living children. It is unfortunate that the mother died before 1911 because the 1911 census for living mothers, showed how many children they had cumulative and how many were living in 1911. Keep me posted.

  • Hi Carol Ann

i think your Dodds could be the DeCourcy Dodds who are still in Killorglin.  As far as I am aware William (Billy) DeCourcy Dodd is the owner of Killorglin Golf Club.  He had a brother Henry who died in Killarney a few years ago.  Maybe the DeCourcy is the French connection.  They would be Church of Ireland so maybe you would get some information from their records. The Dodds had the fishing rights for the Laune River and had a salmon fishery in Killorglin.

    Good luch with your search

  • Hi Brenda.

They're the ones!! This is awesome.  Thanks so much.  I like it that Billy owns the golf club as both my dad (was) and my brother and I are golfers.  It's in the blood, lol.  I'll contact the Church of Ireland for more info and I'll try to find Billy on Facebook or maybe I'll check out the golf club.  This is very exciting and I look forward to making contact finally.

    Have a wonderful day!

  • Hi, Carol-Ann,

I am interested in your   Dodd  relatives., especially George deCourcy Dodd and his brother, Arthur Dodd.

Do you have any information as to where  the resting-places of these two men  are located?

    Best wishes,

    Nicholas Leonard.

  • Hi Carol-Ann,

I am a volunteer with the Killorglin Archive Society www.killorglinarchive.com where we collect, collate and archive old photographs, recordings and films that capture the essence of life in Killorglin parish over the last century.  We are currently in the process of setting up a new website where you will be able to view all photographs and records online. The old website is still there and there is mention of the Dodd family and a photograph of Bod and Alphy Dodd. Under publications with reference to the great war 1914-1918 (written by another committee member of K.A.S - Stephen Thompson), you will see that Walter de Courcey Dodd died in the great war age 21.

I also know the Billy Dodd who owns the Golf Club in Killorglin and I will pass your query to him if you wish ?  My own email if you would like to send any detail of your family tree is ann@consultpc.ie

The home of the Dodd family in Ballymacprior is now St. Josephs Home which is a home for the elderly and the old homestead of the Dodd family is still a part of the building (I believe the nuns live in this section).

    Kind regards,

    Ann

We do not have a local volunteer or parish liaison in Killorglin. Any interest in helping out with the Ireland Reaching Out project? Thanks!

  • Hi Roger,

I would be delighted to help out but before I agree to doing so, can you tell me what is involved and how much time I would need to give to this as I am currently volunteering with a local archive society and I would like to be able to give time to both.

    Kind regards,

    Ann
