James O'Connell was the Leaseholder of a large portion of Lahardane Parish from John Leslie Gun in the 1850's. He married Anna Pope Hennessy about 1837. Anna had a relation in Lahardane called Margaret Hennessy who married Garrett Dee about 1820. Members of both the O'Connell and Dee families of Lahardane emigrated to New Zealand in 1862. Family tradition has that John Pope Hennessy (a cousin of Anna's) was rumoured to be made Governor of New Zealand and that there would be advantagous positions for deserving family members.

Does anyone else have a similiar story concerning the Hennessys in their family lore?

  • Hi, thanks for your  message and for sharing some of your family history.

Upon doing a search I could only find record of a Village called Lahardane, which is found in the parish of Addergoole, CO. Mayo.

you can check  what Church records are available concerning the O' Connells and Hennessys from  Addergoole in the 1800's on the Irishtimes website. The link is

In order to try to find out more about the Hennessy family lore perhaps you can try and connect with a Hennessy Family clan.

    Kind regards,
