My great great grandfather, Cornelius Brennan came to the U.S. around 1850 during the potato famine.  Just recently while visiting in Ireland, I learned that he would have came from the area including Waterville, Sneem and Kenmare area.  His birth is given here as 18 Sep 1832.  He married a Mary Harty (parents were John Harty and Nellie Ryan) in Davidson County, Tennessee in the States in 1853.  They had six children: Jeremiah, John, Mary Elizabeth, Anna J, Katherine Elizabeth and Michael James.  I know there was a Jeremiah Brennan that married Margaret Foulue on 21 Feb 1821 and he may have been one of their children and there was a Cornelius Brennan married to Margaret Galivan and he might have been their child.  Do not know for sure what his parents names were.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

You posted in Kilcrohane but also indicate that Cornelius could be from Dromod or Kenmare parishes.

Dromod RC records start in 1850. Kenmare records start in 1819  http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0666

The RC churches that correspond to Kilcrohane civil parish would be Cahirdaniel (baptismal records start 1831) and Sneem (baptismal records start 1845)

I searched at www.irishgenealogy.ie which has Co. Kerry church records and did not see a baptismal record for Cornelius. Either he was from Caherdaniel parish but born before 1831 or he was from Sneem parish where records start later. Kenmare records did not show a Cornelius Brennan baptismal record in that timeframe.

I will alert our parish liaison for Dromod and Kilcrohane about your message. Possibly he will have some other thoughts.

  • After doing some exploring on www.irishgenealogy.ie I think I have found two strong possibilities.  Since my great great grandfather named his first son, Jeremiah, I looked for Jeremiah's.  A Jeremiah Brennan married Margaret Foulue on 21 Feb 1821 and had six children: Bartholomew, Maurice, NR, James, John and Jeremiah.  Possibility that the NR could be Cornelius?

The second possibility is Cornelius Brennan married Margaret Galivan and they had 3 children I could find so far:Nicholas, Catherine and Joanna, possibly had a son, Cornelius?   A Mary Galivan was baptised on 2 Aug 1840 and her father was Jeremiah and mother, Catherine and witnessed by Cornelius Brennan.  This is the strongest possibility, I think.
