hi I am looking for information on a James Kissane who was possibly born around 1800. He married a Margaret Riordan, born 1801, on January 28, 1822 in Kenmare. They had 5 children: Jeremiah(1823) Mary (1828) Margaret (1833) James (1825) and Thomas (1835). I believe James, the dad, died before 1846. I believe Mary, Margaret and Thomas may have emmigrated to the US first, followed by the mom Margaret and Jeremiah and James. (Margaret's parents were John and Margaret Riordan)Mary was married in the US in 1846...... So they emigrated before then. When they got to the US they changed their names to Cashman..unless they did it before they left. I am primarily looking for any information on the dad James and his parents or any siblings. We are looking for family in the area related to him. I did email the owner of the Kissane sheep farm to ask questions, but did not get an answer. The 1851 census shows a Thomas Kissane as a householder. I am wondering if this is a relation to James. Any help would be appreciated. Cashman is our last name...James was my husband's fifth great grandfather. We are headed to Irleand in the summer of 2016. We are also related to the Finnegans who own the bike shop in Kenmare.

Hello again!
The RC parish of Kenmare/Templenoe has records starting in 1819 so it is unlikely that you will find a baptismal record for James Kissane or any siblings. The 1851 census you mentioned is actually the Griffiths Valuation. which does serve as a substitute census. I would agree that it is likely that Thomas was a relation possibly a brother. I also checked the Tithe records for 1840 for Templenoe parish and there were no Kissane records.

Thank you Roger. So, basically I am at a dead end with James then? Kind of new to the research and I don't know when to say I have reached the end of a clue! My husband's grandparents on both sides all have Irish ancestors..all came from Ireland...I have so many names and locations I am researching my head is spinning!

Yes you are likely at a dead end with finding a baptismal record for James. I went through the head spinning stage and now I'm at the brick wall stage. Have you considered autosomal DNA testing? You may come up with matches on both sides of your family that might give you more head spinning clues.
