Would anyone out there have any details of a Patrick Murphy of Gortadoo, Ballyroe, Ballincolla, Ballyferriter, County Kerry. Born around 1863/4, married Hanora (Nora) Manning/Cahillane on 5th of February 1898. Hanora was previously married to Thomas Manning who died at a relatively young age. Hanora was born on 1st of October 1873 and the birth was registered in Ventry, Dingle union. Patrick and Hanora were married on 5th of February 1898 according to the records for Ballyferriter church, poor law union of Dingle. I also have an unconfirmed date of death for Patrick as Feb./Mar. of 1929. I am trying to trace information on Patrick and his family for a family tree so any details would be much appreciated. Regards, Val.

The 1852 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Dunurlin parish did not show any Murphys. Maybe Patrick's family came from outside the parish or his father/frandfather did not lease enough land to be captured in Griffiths.

I can't tell if you have a church record of the 1898 marriage or also have the civil record. If you don't have the civil record, I would get a copy from the GRO since it should show Patrick's fathers name and where Patrick was living in 1898. I also looked for civil death index records and found two possibles, the 1929 record you mentioned and one in 1937. I can get you instructions on getting records from the GRO if you need them.

  • Thanks for the information Roger. I do have the original civil registration certificates for the wedding in 1898. I have been in the Pearse street Library and the G.R.O. in Abbey Street on many occassions so looking for records are not a problem however I was trying to focus in on a possible date of birth in order to reduce the amount of trawling. I would have thought that Patrick would not have had much land but I did notice from the Griffith's Valuation list that "Hanora Manning" is listed as a land owner so it might be possible that the land remained in Hanora's name even after she married Patrick Murphy. Patrick's dad's name was Thomas and I think his mother's maiden name was "Connor". Many thanks for the information it may help to find this elusive man. Regards, Val.

  • Based on some of the information Roger supplied I was able to trace Patrick's Death date, which Roger had correctly supplied and by working backwards from 1929 when Patrick died (at 60 years) I was able to trace his birth date in 1868. I then got copies of the certs. in the G.R.O. today. Plus I found the wedding certificate from 1898. Many thanks Roger, kind regards, Val.
