Hi,

I am doing research on my family tree and have come across a brick wall. My ancestors names were William Gordon and Catherine Cunniffe. They originated from Galway. In Ireland, they had three children: Margaret (b.1843ish), Mary (b.1846ish), and Catherine (b.1856ish)

They emigrated to Walsall, England in the 1860s. They then had two more children: Annie Elizabeth (b.1865) and William (b.1867).

Now, I have been unable to locate William and Catherine's marriage record, and the baptism records of their first three children. I have reason to believe that it must be from a parish where the RC records are missing for those dates.

I would appreciate any help trying to figure out a little bit more about William Gordon and Catherine Cunniffe's families and possibly narrowing down a parish from where they were from.

  • To add to the Post by Patricia, I attach a record of the marriage of a William Gordan and Winifred Wall in the parish of Tynagh - Co. Galway. Witnesses: James Wall and Patrick Wall.

    There are a number of children baptised in Tynagh to this couple.

    There is a Catherine Gordon baptised in 1832. Sponsor: Ann Cunniffe. A James Keighry married Alicia Gordan in Tynagh on February 14th 1831. Double family Marriage?

    Surname is spelled "Gordan and Gordon".

  • Griffith's Valuation has a William Gordon in the civil parish of Ballynakill - East County Galway.

    In c1850 there is a William Gordon in the town of Woodford. It would appear that he was leasing part of a building as a dispensary?

    What occupation did your William Gordon work at in England. There may be some clues there?

    Thank you for all the information so far. I believe William Gordon was a tailor journeyman!

     

    He was a boarder in Walsall in 1851, which is why I believe he may not appear on the Griffiths Valuation in Ireland.

    February 25th 1811 - William Gordan to ? Treacy. Witnesses: Laurence Treacy and William Carroll

    February 18th 1813 - Mary Gordan to Francis Coughlan - Witnesses: James Coughlan and William Gordan

    November 6th 1814 - Alicia Gordan to John Mee - Witnesses: William Gordan and John Mee

    In 1849 a William Gordon and Catherine Gordon were convicted of trespass on the lands of Hugh Gordon - Killmore (Killimor) Petty Sessions - East Co. Galway
