I'm trying to trace Michael's parents/siblings etc. Seem to have hit a brick wall. Michael's son Michael (1845) is the father of my grandfather Joseph Lyons (1879) who later became Australian PM. Hoping to fill in some of the gaps in our early history.

Stephen:
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
I checked Roots Ireland and did not find a baptismal record in the Tynagh RC church around 1818. I searched from 1815-1825. There were records in 1821, 1824 and 1825 but for different churches. Tynagh RC records start in May 1816. See link to the parish register below. Possibly, Michael was born before May 1816 which would mean his baptismal record is not available.
Let me know if you have any questions.

I am also related to the Lyons family. My information is that Joe Lyons father was Michael Henry Lyons.
My information is that Michael Henry's father was Larry Lyons
Larry had two brothers that also came to Australia, Marcus William and Andrew. Marcus is my GG Grandfather.
Glendalough is where my information tells me where they came from.
Let me know what you think

Thank you everyone. Yes Michael Henry (sometimes referred to as Michael Joseph) Lyons was Joe's father according to what I have. Our family notes and anecdotal history suggests that his father was also Michael born 1818. I have long suspected that either his name or year of birth were wrong because I could find nothing on him anywhere. Your suggestions have opened up a whole new line of inquiry that I will chase. I did find 2 Michael Lyons (one born 1816, one born 1818) from Galway who came to Australia (one in 1841, one in 1843), both had a son Michael (one 1845, one 1846). That made me think that maybe "ours" was not the right one. I shall dig some more with your very helpful information. Thanks again and all the very best for Christmas and the New Year!.

Hi Stephen
I think you will find that Michael Lyons had a sister named Anne m Michael Martin also emigrated to Tasmania having been sponsored by Michael. They arrived in Stanley accompanied by Bridget Martin, Pat, Michael & Thomas and a female named Fanny, not thought to be of the same Martin family. I have no record of the parents of Anne & Michael Lyons at this point in time.

My husband is looking for the family of Bridget Lyons who married Michael McGuire in 1874.
She may be daughter of Denis Lyons and Kathleen Treacy (both likely to have been born around 1850). We believe they had children called Michael, Denis and Redmond as well as Bridget. Apparently Denis also came to Australia.
We would appreciate any insights into Michael (Joseph) Lyons’ siblings or other children.LesleyTasmania

Hi Lesley
I'm yet to verify very much of Michael (born 1845 in Tasmania)'s siblings or parents. My focus has been on Michael, who married Ellen Carroll, born 1845 in Ireland.
My information suggests that Michael's siblings were Anne, born 1842 in Ireland, Charlotte, born 1849 in Tasmania, Thomas, born 1851 in Tasmania and Frances born 1852 in Tasmania.
Thomas born July 2nd 1852, apparently died July 6th 1925. I have a birth record for him but nothing else at this stage.
One generation further back is where it gets very murky and records seem nigh impossible to find but my information suggests that Michael (born 1845)'s parents were Michael born 1818 in Ireland and Bridget Burke born 1821 in Ireland, both died in Tasmania. Michael (born 1818)'s father was Michael also and his mother was Bridget McDonagh. They had Ann, Michael, James and Margaret. I believe Ann came to Tasmania with her brother Michael but I'm not sure about James and Margaret.
Not sure any of this helps you but hopefully it does.Regards
Stephen

Is this likely to be your Michael and Bridget?

Joseph Aloysius Lyons' aunt, Mary Ann Lyons, is my GGGrandmother. Our shared ancestor is Mary Ann's father, Joe's grandfather, who migrated with his wife and a child. It would seem that Mary Ann was the child who arrived aboard Royal Sovereign in 1843 with her parents, Michael and Bridget Lyons.
It seems that a Michael Lyons and Bridget Burke/Bourke married in 1841, had a daughter, Mary Ann, born 20/6/1842, and set sail for Van Dieman's Land in 1843.
In August 1845, they had a son, Michael Henry Lyons, born in Horton (Circular Head) Tasmania, mother clearly named as Bridget Bourke.
He married Ellen Carroll; they had 9 children, including Joseph Aloysius Lyons.
Many have Michael Lyons and Bridget Burke marrying in Killeenadeema on 18/2/1841, which would fit with a baby and travel in 1843 - BUT their source/ reference is the attached marriage which clearly calls her Bridget Quirke. So it would seem they are mistaken.
I also have a Michael Lyons (1816-1900) parents Michael Lyons/ Ann Dennis, wife Bridget Burke. So is this the right one, and where did he come from? Does this help anyone?
