Looking for Thomas Fleming of Tuam.

Hi, there are a few Fleming families still around Tuam. There is an area called the Weirs where a good few of the families originated. My great-grandfather John Fleming was born there but married into the Bermingham family in Cloonfush. My grandfather was Thomas Fleming - he passed away in 1946. My father is also Thomas Fleming, & lives in Cloonfush.

If you give me an idea of which time period you're looking for your Thomas Fleming in, I'll try to help you. 

HI BFleming, my  grandmother, Bridget Fleming, daughter of Patrick and Mary (Concannon). Bridget was born April 1870. She came to Boston in 1891. That's really all that I know about her life in Ireland. She did have siblings who came to America around the same time. I don't know about the ones that may have stayed in Ireland. Your Grandfather must be about the same age. My Grandother (Bessie) died in Boston in 1943. I would think that we are talking about a timeline of the mid 1800's. Do you think there is a connection with these Flemings?

Hi,

Bridget Fleming's family lived in Rinkippin, Tuam. She had 9 sibling birth records in Tuam. Her brother Michael Fleming married in Tuam in 1892, living with spouse / one son Martin J Fleming aged  6  at Carrowpeter, Tuam in 1901.

Another sibling Patrick Fleming residing in Rinkippin in 1911, married Ellen Ruane in 1903, 5 children born / 4 alive in 1911.

BFleming:  I believe we are related.  You mention that John Fleming (b. 1846) married into the Bermingham family.  I suspect (but am not totally certain) that John married Bridget Bermingham, daughter of John Bermingham (1833-1897) and Bridget Donoghoe (1821-1913).  John Bermingham was the brother of my ggg grandfather Redmond Bermingham (1825-1862).  I believe that the family was centered in Cloonfush, and over time all of the Berminghams emigrated out, with the exception  of the daughter who married into the Fleming family.

I visted Ireland in September last year (I live in New York) and visited Cloonfush and drove to the end of the road where I found the cemetery.  One of the graves was for a Bridget Birmingham (1821-1913) who, I believe, would have been your gg grandmother.  I have attached hereto a photo of her gravestone.  Does any of this sound familiar?

Are there still family living in Cloonfush?  Do you know of any other resources which I may access to find out more about the Berminghams of Cloonfush (related families include the Kennedys and the Hessions).

I'm in Cloonfush with my father at the moment; he always knew that we were related to Donoghues (who were from Claretuam) but wasn't quite sure of the relationship - so thanks for clarifying that. Recent generations of the Donoghue family have been lawyers in Tuam - there's a little history on www.taodonoghue.com (note the 'State Solicitor' reference is similar to a DA).

John Fleming came from the Weirs & married Bridget Bermingham in 1878. We have a copy of the marriage settlement (deeds). 

The old Bermingham house is no longer standing (one gable wall remains) but my parents still have a photo of it, taken in the 1950's (we believe). They will dig this out tomorrow & post it. I will also take a walk tomorrow & take a few snaps. The house is in Cloonfush, but set back a little from the road - see the attached map.

My father remembers another Bermingham family in Tuam in the 1940's/1950's, who lived at the corner of Galway Road & Weir Road. He thinks they may have been related, but is not 100% sure.

We also have a photo of my grandfather Thomas Fleming (1887-1946). Note the spelling - in the 1901 Census it was recorded as Flemming. This was attributed to the Census Recorder & his interpretation of Fleming!
