I'm trying to locate a marriage certificate for my great, great grandparents, Bridget Concannon Long and William Long (1846-1879).

Together they had the following children:  Winifred Mary Long and William Long (1878-1879).  After the death of her husband, and her son,

Bridget Concannon Long, and her only daughter, Winifred Mary Long, left Galway for the United States.  They appear in the 1880 U.S. Census living in Paterson, New Jersey.

I know very little about either family, other than their address at Ballygaddy Road, No. 2, Tuam, Galway.  Any additional Concannon or Long Galway information would be very much appreciated.

The Dropbox link contains birth certificates (Winifred and William) and deTh certificates for each William Long.

Many thanks,

Caren Matyckas

  • I noted that the informant on William Long senior's Death Cert was William Concannon. Guessing that he might be a brother of Bridget, I checked the censuses, and found the family in 1901 & 1911 (William died between those years). As he was aged about 50 in 1901, I checked for his baptism, and found these records, including sisters Bridget (first one must have died) - these may be for your Concannon family:

    =====================================================================================

    William Concannon appears to have married a Mary Mannion - I found the baptisms for their children, but I cannot find a marriage cert for them, or for William Long and Bridget Concannon, which is strange.

    Anyway, hope you find these records helpful.

  • Thank you very much for locating the baptism records for William Long and his siblings.  The information was indeed helpful; and my records agree with your information.

    I can connect several of William's siblings to Paterson, New Jersey, where Bridget Concannon Long immigrates in 1880.  During the years 1881-1890, Bridget periodically lives at the Paterson, New Jersey home of Patrick Long, who was born in Galway in 1838 and died on January 28, 1989 in Paterson, New Jersey.  After Patrick's death, Bridget Concannon Long lives with Patrick's widow, Mary Mannion Long, for the next 2-3 years.  Is Patrick's widow the same Mary Mannion married to William Concannon or is Mary Mannion a popular name in Galway?

    I'm unable to connect Patrick Long to William Long or any of his siblings.  I did locate a baptism record for Patrick Long, born on March 6, 1838, to William Long and Catherine Connor of Rahoon.  Could William Long have fathered Patrick before he married Sarah Griffin on September 15, 1843?

    All my documents list the Concannon residence as Ballygaddy Road, Tuam No. 2, Galway.  Your baptism records indicate the children of Patrick Concannon and Bridget Keane were living in Annaghdown; is Annaghdown near Tuam?

    Could William Concannon, the informant on William Long, Senior's death certificate, be the father of Bridget Concannon Long or is it more likely, as you indicated, the brother of Bridget?

    As to why you were unable to find a marriage certificate for William Long and Bridget Concannon, please see the Galway research receipt with the handwritten note at the top stating,  "they were married but not to each other."

    All documents have been uploaded to Dropbox; here's the link:

    Thank you, in advance, for any light you can shed on these families.

    Best wishes to all for a prosperous, healthy and Happy New Year!
