Hello Pat Madden,

Pat I was given your name by Christie Cunniffe from Eyrecourt.

My Grand Father John Michael Redden was the son of Michael Redden of Clonkelagh or Clonkela and Bridget Penders of Ballynakill. My Great Grand Father was a local farmer and had seven children Mary1877, Patrick Francis 1882, Thomas Patrick 1883, John Michael 1886, Michael 1888, Mary Bridget 1891, and Edward (Ned) 1895. My Grand Father John Michael emmigrated in 1908 to New York and was preceeded by Patrick Francis 1905 and Thomas Patrick 1906. Mary the oldest appears to have died at a young age no details presently available. Patrick died in 1918 from the Spanish Flu in NYC. Thomas died in 1916 causes unknown.John Michael died of cancer in 1941 in Bronx, New York. Michael left Ballynakill and eventually settle in Skerries, He died 1959. Mary Bridget had an untimely death and I am looking for details on her demise. Edward inherited the farm and his daughter in law still lives in the family home. Edward died in Ballynaill on the 14 March 1967.

Christie has given me the following information:

By the way Fred I may have discovered the Clonkelagh where members of your own family came from. I told you in the past that I thought that it may have been a corruption of Clonkeagh a townland in Clonfert parish beside Ballinakill where the Reddens live today. However, I now believe it may in fact be in the parish of Tiranascragh as there is a place there known as Clonkela in which a Redden family still resides. If you go to the Tiranascragh page at www.irelandxo.com and speak to Pat Madden the parish administrator. He may be able to make the contact that you need. Clonkela was more than likely a townland at an earlier stage that has through time become obscure and is now what we term a local place-name within another townland Muingbaun. The Redden family is named as residing at house No 12 in the 1901 census and house No 6 in the 1911 census in the townland of Muingbaun.

Any information you could provide about my Great Grand Father would be greatly appreciated and hopefully I can make a connection to the family. If you can discover documents such as the Baptismal records or the Marrige Banns I would be indebted to you. I am attaching a photograph of my Great Grandfather with two of his grand children Mary and John Redden

  • Hi Fred.

I was delighted to get your enquiry and have good news for you.Its definitely the same family. I have spoken to Annie Farrell who now lives in Kill in Tiernascragh Parish. She was born Redden. and gave me some lovely doccuments which I will email toyou privately. Meanwhile look up the Irish census for 1901 and 1911 for Muingbaun in Co. Galway and see the Redden returns. They are the same family. The townland of Muingbaun is even today known locally as "Clonkela".

Expect a more detailed reply soon. Please do become a member of our Tiernascragh page on this website.

  • Hello Patrick,

I has been sometime since I have communicated with you and I am hoping that you may still have those documents available to send me. It looks like the family may be contemplating another trip to Ireland and we would like to include Clonkela on the itinerary. Some of Micheal's Decendents live in Skerries, Co. Dublin and they happen to run a tour company. Some of us are pushing for them to be our escourts to Longford and Galway. Who knows we may still have some long lost relatives there.

I am including a picture of my Grandfather that you may post to the Parish Website

  • Pat,

Some family members will be in Ireland for 2 weeks in November and I would love to steer them to the parish. You said you had some documents for me but I have never received them. Could they have been sent to the wrong e-mail address? jaeger_frederick@yahoo.com
