Hello!! I am looking for more information on the DeCourcey family of Roundstone.  My husband's Grandmother was Margaret Mary DeCourcey b.1885.  She was the daughter of James DeCourcey (1852-1937) and Sarah V Connelly (1852-1942).  We are visiting Roundstone this fall, and would like to learn more before our trip.  Is there somewhere to visit in Roundstone that would help us to learn more?

Thanks!! Diane

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I found James and Sarah in the 1901 census in the village of Roundstone along with a daughter Annie. I also found another family where there is a grandmother with four of her grandchildren and one appears to be Margaret. I also found James and Sarah in the 1911 census.

Here is a link to more information about Roundstone  http://www.roundstone-connemara.com/

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Roger,

Thank you so much for your reply.  I am sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you.   That is the family that I was looking for!!  I am very grateful for your help.  I do have one more question.  Is there a main Roman Catholic cemetary in Roundstone that would be a good place to start looking for burial plots?   We will be visiting soon, and I was hoping to maybe see a gravesite or something of that nature.

    Thanks again,

    Diane

  • HI Diane

I was there a few years ago looking for family history. There are three cemeteries that I know of.  The one Roger linked is just outside of Roundstone and if it is the same one I visited (I think it is), it was so overrun and unkept that it was too dangerous to walk in. It is very, very old and I was able to zoom and take some pictures from a distance. I read that there was going to be an attempt to clean it up, but I do not know if it was done.  There is a cemetery at the Catholic Church, but it appeared to hold the graves of priests. Then, there supposed to be a cemetery (I found out after I left) across from the Errisbeg Bed and Breakfast. That B&B was found by travelling through the village, past the Catholic Cemetery and follow the road a few miles. The B&B was on the right and the Cemetery was supposed to be on the left. You can ask any local where the B&B was as they were a long time resident.

Interestingly, I was also looking for information on the Conneely's, namely Thomas Conneely and his wife Sarah/Sally (nee Mannion).

The Catholic Chirch has some wonderful old records going back a long ways. I was able to see them for a short time and even searched through them a bit. Was able to link one family member that way.

  • Hi Peggy,

I am sorry that I did not see your post earlier.  I did find the cemetary that I was looking for.   It was the Gurteen Cemetary.  After a day in Roundstone, we found the cemetary by chance. We arrived close to sunset, and just walked around to hopefully find something. We had no idea if we were even in the right place.  Just as we were getting ready to leave, I found the grave!! It was a wonderful experience.  The cemetary must have been cleaned up. It was very hilly but not overrun and unkept.

I have not found much information on the Connelly side yet, but I will keep your names in mind when I do.  I will post again if I find anything.

    Hello,

I too am looking for Decourcey/Decoursey family members. My great grandmother Mary Decoursey Connolly, from her obit, died in 1926 and i estimate her birth as 1851.

Her obit states a brother survives her in Ireland (unnamed) and another brother "P Decoursey" survives in a town near Pittsburgh PA. Also indicates her mother died in 1924 at over 100 years of age.

Anyone have Mary DeCoursey on their radar? Married to Patrick P Connolly, dob about 1840, Son of Peter Connolly and Margaret Mullin or Mullen.

    i've uploaded the obit.
Can anyone assist? Provide advice or guidance?

    Thanks Joe
