The place names Cappanaveagh and Bathinghouse, both in Rahoon parish, appear on the birth records of my McGrath ancestors in the 1850's. From Griffith's Valuation I also found a McGrath that I think is my ancestor as a tenant on Shell Lane, Townparks. Can you tell me approximately where these streets or neighborhoods are on the modern Galway city map?

Rahoon civil parish covers land west of Galway city, and also included part of County Galway and some parts of the western side of the city. Townparks is a townland within Rahoon civil parish, and was on the western outskirts of Galway city. Shell lane was in this townland see the c1840s OSI map , the name of the lane is a little easier to read on the later c1890 OSI map. Shell Lane now seems to be called Raleigh Row see Google map. It's at the same location and follows the same path as Shell Lane, a western section of the lane seems to be named Palmyra Avenue.
Cappanaveagh (50 acres) is also a townland within Rahoon civil parish, and is located a short distance south west of Shell lane and on the coast - see Cappanaveagh townland c1840. It's now a built up area, and would include Dalysfort Road (Google Map).
Bathinghouse does not appear as a townland name in the area.. It could be an old local name for a lane or district...
