My GGG John Farrell came to Baltimore, USA in the 1850s. His MC show him from Co Galway as do the births of his 7 children.  His DC shows his parents as Luke Farrell and Ellen Doyle - John was a stonecutter.  Would there be one area of Co Galway more likely to have stonecutters than another?  I am trying to narrow my search.

Can you add a bit more info

What is John's date of birth ?

What are the names of his children (in birth order)  ?

Searching the 1901 census for Galway Farrells who were stone masons gave just 1 record :http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Galway/Ballinasloe_Urban/Brackenagh/1366906/

That is unfortunately no good as the son is born across the Shannon in Westmeath

Stonecutting was a trade found in several places - lots of stones in Galway !!

  • Martin - I realize from the way I worded my first message it sounded like John AND his children were all born in Galway.  Actually only JOhn was in 1846/47.  He came to the states in 1851/54, married here and had his 7 children.  The childrens Baptismal records from Baltimore state Co Galway as where John came from in Ireland.          That said - do you know if that usually meant where the individual was born OR where they lived when they moved to the states?    John's parents were Luke Farrell and Ellen Doyle - the oddity there is the name Luke was never used again in the Farrell family.  Lots of Williams, Patricks,  and lots of Johns.  I know I was grasping at straws with the stonecutter business but am trying to figure out a way to narrow down where in CO Galway they could have come from......it a big place!!!

  • No it was worded ok  I had thought that the children were born stateside I needed their names to see if there was a possibility that it would give a clue to the family naming system

If John was 5-7 when he came stateside do you have census records of him from1860 on ? Any other Farrells nearby ?

If John has Galway down that would be where he lived and in the 1840s was also where he would have born

If John was only a lad when he came over then he more than likely learned the trade in the US Does he appear on the census with his father at all that would show Luke's occupation too

  • I have found a John Farrell in a 1860 Baltimore City directory listed as a stonecutter. Our John would only be 13 ish then tho so not sure its him.  1880 census has him listed as laborer living with his wife Mary Roche and their children: William Patrick, John Thomas, Anne, Mary, Joseph and Edward, later they had James.  1890 directory has him listed again as a stonecutter at the address I know they lived at , the same as in the 1900 and 1910 censuses.  I have not found any Luke Farrells anywhere in the baltimore area.  Family lore says John was one of 3 brothers that came over together, John, Luke and Garrett - again, noone but John can I find in Baltimore area.  No Lukes of father age or brother age.  (Also I apologize - for some reason my computer will not let me skip a line and make a new paragraph which makes this very hard to deciper! )
