Hi all, I discovered when researching my family tree that my 3x great grandparents were Irish and it looks like they may have emigrated to Scotland around 1845ish where they lived in Dalry, Ayrshire which was a mining community.

There appears to be some dubiety over our family name as for 4 generations between birth registrations, cenus records etc we were known as either Queen, Quinn or Quin. My Dad's generation and my generation were always known as Quinn but we have no idea what is our correct family name.

 

From what I know my 3x great grandfather was called Bernard Queen or Quinn and I believe he was born around 1827. I am unsure where he was born but census records in Scotland show that his mothers name was Molly (don't know her maiden name). It looks like she also emigrated to Scotland. In the 1851 census it shows Molly as being aged 50.

 

Bernard married Mary Rodgers. If my research is correct Mary was born around 1829 in Kilnahown in Galway. She may have been baptised on 29 August 1829 at Clontuskhert. I believe her parents names were Patritius Rodgers and Maria Devery (if I have the correct baptism record).

 

My cousin and I are planning a trip to Ireland in the spring and it would be amazing if we could get more solid information to go on so that we can visit where our ansestors lived and we would be extremely grateful for any hints and tips on how we can research historical records in Ireland. Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

    Not all RC parishes have records back to 1827 which complicates a search for a baptismal record. Molly is a nickname for Mary. I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and there was a September 23 1827 baptismal record for a Bernard Quinn in Coalisland Co. Tyrone, father Bernard and mother Mary O'Neill. There was also a record in 1826 in Co.Westmeath and an 1825 record in Co.Tyrone.

    You may want to consider a DNA test. Some of your matches may be on your Quinn line and the matches may have more info on the origins of the family in Ireland.

  • Thank Roger that really helps. I have done the DNA test but unfortunately although I have had some hits they are more for my Mum's family rather than my dads.
