Patrick Hanrahan was convicted in Loughrea in 1801 and sentenced to transportation for life to NSW. He arr here on Atlas 2 30th Oct 1802. His crime is not known. As many on Atlas were United Irishmen, many assume he was also. But Con Costello in his book "Botany Bay" says that he and 2 brothers were convicted of murder and that the 2 brothers were hanged and Pat transported. Unfortunately there is no specific reference for this. I tried to contact him but it was just before his death. But Captain of Atlas stated that there were no hardened criminals on ship only political prisoners and 4 petty thieves.
Nothing more is known about him in Ireland.and I just assume that he was from Galway. He would appear to have been well educated as indicated by the hand writing in a diary that he kept.. He was obviously very interested in horses and kept records of them. In 1816 he was granted a Conditional Pardon for his work in the convict gang which built road over Blue Mountains. There is an interesting old photo of a house in Ireland- have had no luck tracing it but it is not unlike the Meelik house on the Landed Estates website.
He married twice in NSW 1 Euphemia Young 2 Cathernine Hogan
Children 1st William Henry, Patrick, Denis, JohnJames, 2nd Michael, Philip,May Ann, Margaret, Ann, Bridget and Sarah.
Would like to find anything about him in Ireland.

Hi there,
Please post your message on the Loughrea parish page here: http://www.irelandxo.com/group/loughrea-galway
Have you checked the Prisoners' Petitions and Cases, 1788-1836 documents? These consist of petitions to the Lord Lieutenant for commutation or remission of sentence, and record the crime, trial, sentence, place of origin and family circumstances.
Or the State Prisoners' petitions: these specifically concern those arrested for participation in the 1798 rebellion, and record the same information as the main series of petitions.
These records are available at the National Archives of Ireland. Copies of the microfilms and database were presented to the Australian government and can now be found in many State archives. You can check here: www.nationalarchives.ie Early convict arrivals records, maiking up some of the gaps in the National Archives of Ireland material, are also online at www.pcug.org.au/~ppmay/convicts.htm (Irish Convicts to Australia 1791-1815).
There is a 1798 document of Convicted Rebels from Galway. This is found in the Journal of the Galway Archaeological and Historical Society, Vol.23, No. 1. The same journal (Vol. 24., No.3) has a 1791 Survey of Loughrea town (occupiers). This does not mean to say that Patrick was necessarily from Loughrea town. He was convicted there, but he may have been from the surrounding areas.
I have found some sites which might be of interest to you: http://genforum.genealogy.com/hanrahan/messages/360.html and http://members.ozemail.com.au/~jim.fleming/Hanrahan.htm and http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~yewenyi/11/6117.html
Hopefully someone in the local community will be able to shed some more light about his life in Galway for you.
Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.
Kind regards,
Sinead Cooney

Sinead,
Thankyou for your prompt reply. Off hand i can't remember just what I have checked, but think I have exhausted all records here in Australia including the sites you suggested. But I will follow up your other suggestions.
many thanks

I know that this is an old post but I am related to Patrick Hanrahan and am trying to find out more about him.
My descendency is
1 Patrick Hanrahan - Euphemia Young
2 John James Hanrahan - Joanna Neville
3 Mary May Hanrahan - Unknown
4 Catherine Jane Hanrahan - William John Tierney
5 John James Tierney (my grandfather)
There is a decent profile of Patrick Hanrahan on FamilySearch.org

Thanks for your reply. Think I have added something to you elsewhere, but not sure where that was. Anyway, I have seen the familysearch information. I do question the fact that it has Euphemia as being born Isle of Man. I would more likely think it was Sotland. If you google them, you will find information about she and sister being convicted for vagrancy and theft. in Banff.
