I am trying to locate where in county Galway my ancestor Thomas Keefe was from.According to the 1891,1881,1871 census of England he was from county galway and was born around 1834.His children were Eliza born about 1862,Mathew,born about 1864,Sarah (A) born about 1868,Martin born about1870,Ellen born about 1872,john born about 1875,the family dont appear on any census priot to 1871,I also cannot locate any of the childrens births in England although they are marked down as being born in Ashton-under-lyne Lancashire on the census,I have checked on the local parish register and they do not appear on that either. On the census Thomas is described as a widower,His jobs have been varied  from cotton mill working to gardener to stone masons labourer.I believe Thomas died after 1901 in Ashton-under -lyne.The surname Keefe doesnt appear to be that common in Galway and I did see a birth for a Thomas Keefe son of Peter and Margaret Corrigan in Ballinakill East Galway.I have also checked the tithes applotments and there a a couple of Keefes in the same area also at Glenamaddy.

Any help greatly appreciated

Simon

I checked the Roots Ireland indexes. They do not have the baptismal records for Glenamaddy parish. Also the Glenamaddy records start in 1838.

However, I did locate an 1838 baptismal record for a Thomas Keefe parents Patrick and Catherine in the Glinsk/Kilbegnet RC church which is not too far from Glenamaddy. I don't know if this record is pertinent to your search but I thought I would pass it on.

  • Hi Roger

Many thanks,I had'nt seen that particular record,I will certainly see if there are any links, I have seen a Thomas Keefe born 1834 in Ballynakill so I think I'm in the right area of Galway but am struggling a bit to be confident it is the right person. As for Thomas' children I could'nt find any birth registrations in England  and the family dont appear on census records as far as I'm aware until 1881.Keefe doesnt appear to be a very common name in the Galway area.

  • Hello - I am looking for my ancestor's parish as well. Her name was Bridget E. Sweeney born Dec 22 1861 in Galway. She migrated to the United States Chicago Illinois area around 1878 with her spouse Michael J. Leahy. I believe he was from Limerick. Her parents were John Sweeney and Bridget Fitzgerald. Can you help me find her parish so I may continue on my search?

I looked for a marriage record for Bridget and Michael but could not find a record in the civil record indexes.

I looked on the Roots Ireland indexes and did not find a baptismal record in Co. Galway in 1861 for a Bridget Sweeney. I did find an 1859 record with a father named John in the Kilcummin Oughterard RC church (which is in Connemara). However, the mother's given name was Margaret not Bridget. Likely this record is not for your ancestor.

There are some parishes in Co. Galway which do not have records back to 1861.

Let me know if you have more info or questions.
