The 1861 census in Wolverhampton England shows my great great grandparents William Norton and Bridget Cloonan Norton were from Galway.  It shows both their ages as 30 but I think they were both still in their 20's.  William was probably born in 1833.  Our family name was probably Naughten or a variation before they moved to England.

Edward and Sarah Burke lived with the Norton's and Robert and Mary Hennely lived close by, all from Galway and around the same age.

I don't know when the family left Ireland.  My great grandfather John Norton was born in Wolevrhamption in 1857.  They moved to the U.S. in 1864 or 1865 and settled in Janesville, Wisconsin.  There is also a Michael Norton who moved to England then Janesville who I assume was William's brother.  There is an Ann Norton born around 1800 in Ireland buried by William so I assume this was his mother.

I corresponded with another Norton doing research in Galway who said the families my be from St. Brendan's parish in Loughrea however that is just a guess at this point.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions on how to research these families.

  • Hi John

There is a record of a William Naughton baptism in  Galway 1832 on www.rootsireland.ie/

The parish is not Loughrea however but it is in the list of parish options for these records - Galway East

There is a record of Bridget Cloonan 1836 Galway & Bridget Cloonane 1839 Galway

The parishes are both in Galway West so Loughrea is not in the list.
