I am trying to find a Patrick Monahan born about January of 1839. His parent's names could be Thomas and Katherine [listed on death certificate].  He emigrated to the USA about 1853 and was married in the US. The family would be listed in Catholic registers if there are any.

According to some of his son's paperwork, Patrick was from Galway County. I can not find any paperwork here to confirm that.

Any help/advice is greatly appreciated!

  • Hi Stacie,

I hit the jackpot on ancestry - some kind soul has done all the work on your Monahans and put it on the public member trees.

I have attached the 2 pages.

    Best regards

  • Col,

Thank you for taking the time to look and attach that tree.

The Holland tree is linked to mine and I know her well. Unfortunately, we are at the same wall with Patrick in not knowing exactly where in Galway he is from.  Immigration information is lacking for this time period in the US [I think I counted over 100 'Patrick Monahan's coming in one year alone [with various spellings for the surname]. Most only list the passenger name, sometime an age with no other information to help identify which of the 100+ would be 'our' Patrick.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

  • Hi Stacie,

I had another search on rootsireland births / baptisms for Patrick Monahan with father Thomas Galway 1839 + - 2 years and found Patrick Monihans 1838. Mother's name not Katherine though.

Given literacy problems in those times it could be your man as there are no matches for parents Thomas and Katherine in those years in any other counties.

    I'm sorry I can't attach the file - I keep getting a message that it's too large.

rootsireland is a pay site; I can work out the parish in Galway but can't get the mother's name without paying.

    Cheers

  • Col,

That could very well be him, the parent's names came from Patrick's son, so he might be mistaken on the mother's name. Just having a parish would give me a place to start searching the free sites first!

    Thank you!
