Hi--I'm looking for Michael Tennian (maybe "Tennyan" or "Tennihan"), born around 1816 in Galway (I think), and his wife Mary Welch, born around 1817. They had four sons: Miles (b 1841 in Ireland), Patrick (b 1843 in Ireland), Michael (b 1844 not sure whether in Ireland or Massachusetts, USA), John (b 1850 in Massachusetts, USA, I think). I believe that they immigrated to the US around 1844-1846. Can anyone help? Thanks!

Hi there,
Well the first thing I checked when I read your email was the spelling of 'Tennian'. Very unusual and one I haven't heard of before (that does not mean to say that it doesn't exist, only that is unusual to my ears). So I checked the Irish Times surname search (from mid-19th century) to see what other possible variants there could be, but alas I could not find it. You can check it here: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/ So where did the name derive from? Maybe Tiernan? Tennyson?
You can check for the name Welch here (most common variant here is Walsh): http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/index.cfm?fuseaction=Go.&UserID=
Have you checked with other family members or looked for old documents or family bibles for for clues about their place of origin? County Galway is very big, so you will have a better chance of finding information if you had a more precise location.
Have you tried checking the Ellis Island records (www.ellisisland.org) or the Castle Garden records (www.castlegarden.org)? Generally, more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at, this could be a good place to find more information, and perhaps even find out an exact place of origin.
Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864 however. You can access the website here: http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm
You could also try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at. Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38). Microfilm copies of the books for all of Ireland are available at the National Archives of Ireland (NAI) http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/tithe-applotment-books-and-the-primary-griffith-valuation/ or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS).
Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

Hi, Your search for Micheal Tennian, is hampered by the fact that his name would have been Tannian, he would have been decended from a long line of Blacksmiths in Co. Galway, he would be most likely have originated either from Ardrahan Co. Galway or Carrowbeg, Belclare, Tuam, Co Galway. I believe that there may also have been a daughter Bridget, He was probally married @ 1830 and left Ireland @ 1849, most likely they went to Boston Ma. as that where the largest concentration of Tannians settled and carried on as blacksmiths in several states. All Tannians are related, the Name is solely confined to Connaught, Ireland, mainly just Galway. Variations of the name are Tanahan,Tanehan,Tanian,Tanion, Tannian, Tannion, Tannyan,Tanyan,Tanyhan,Tennian & Tennion. Tannian is the only form found in Ireland and still remains rare. I hope this is of some help to you, please feel free to contact me by email if you need further help, Good luck in your searches.
