Hi Rick,
I too descend from the Maddens from that area and they also left Ireland for Hopkinton, MA which is very near Milford, MA. We should collaborate!
My 4th great-grandparents were Michael Madden (1805-1853) and Margaret Silk (1816-1881). Michael Madden was from the townland of Lisheennavannoge (Cloncarthy). He died in the Clontuskert parish of Galway, Ireland in the Clonfert diocese. I have not yet located where he is buried there. After his death, his wife Margaret and their children moved to Hopkinton, MA. Their son, John Madden (1840-1874) married Eliza Woods (1838-1928)--these were my 3rd great-grandparents who both died in Iowa, United States which is where my family and I still live.
Eliza is from the Woods family from the nearby townland of Clonkeen in the Cappataggle parish of Galway, Ireland which is also in the Clonfert diocese. Eliza's parents were William Woods (1801-1855) and Winifred "Fanny" Griffin (1798-1889). William and Fanny are buried at St. John the Evangelist in Hopkinton, MA.
I belive that the Maddens and Woods families were well connected with one another in Ireland and both families moved to Hopkinton, MA around the mid-1850s. I have reviewed all of the Irish baptismal records for the Madden and Woods families that are connected with my 3rd and 4th great-grandparents and many times, the Godparents were fellow Maddens, Woods or Griffins.
I hope this message finds you well and that I can help you in your search. I would love to learn who my 5th great-grandparents were and to visit the area someday!
Best wishes,
Emily Heaston

There are several Curley families in Clontuskert and possibly that is the original surname of James' mother
Some have done an Ancestry DNA test
There is also a Madden Gathering in Portumna in August which you may consider going to
Emily have you been in touch with Maddens in Ireland or done a DNA test ?

Thank you for your posts. Emily, Hopkinton MA is indeed very close to Milford MA. I am not sure when James Madden came to the US but I do know that my great-grandfather Patrick was born in Ireland in 1844.
I do not have a great deal of info on the Madden side in Clonkuskert so any additional is appreciated
Regards
Rick

Hi Martin,
Yes, I have done AncestryDNA, and I have several Madden matches, but all people here in the US. Do you have any suggestions for finding matches in Ireland?
I would love to learn more about the Madden Gathering in Portumna in August!
Rick, my Madden ancestors lived right between the Clontuskert and Aughrim Roman Catholic churches, so you may want to search both of those collections. I know I have many Patrick Maddens in my tree, and I will take a closer look this evening when my little ones are in bed. My direct ancestor, John Madden, also has a brother named Patrick. Did you test on Ancestry? Maybe I can find you there.
I’ll be in touch soon:)

The Mannion Gathering info is avaialbel through FB https://www.facebook.com/events/111606496189958/
For the DNA I suggest that you join the Galway DNA group https://www.facebook.com/groups/GalwayDNA/ and have uploaded your raw DNA data (from Settings on Ancestry) to gedmatch.com
There are Irish and Diaspora DNA tests there to see if you match

Emily,
Thanks for keeping this going. I will check the two parishes you mention. I do not have any info on James Maddens children other than the ones listed on his grave stone, so Patrick (my great grandfather could have a brother)
I have not yet tested DNA on Ancestry.com but am considering it. I do have a family tree on Ancerstry.com which is not very compreshensive.

I really think our Madden branches must be connected somehow since they all came from Clontuskert and then lived so near one another in MA. Take a look at these handwritten family trees and see what you think. I have a family tree on ancestry.com too and have really been working on finding documentation of the Maddens in both Clontuskert and the Hopkinton area.
Having trouble attaching photos to this post from my phone. Will send to you very soon! Emily

I am also very interested in finding out about the Maddens in this previous post.
I have been unable to further my inquiry about Thomas Madden married to Bridget Flanagan, both were born about 1800. They went on to settle in Canada and later in Minnesota. We have not have the markers done yet, but 23 and me and haven't had many matches with Maddens in Ireland. Any help would be appreciated. I would also be interested in the family gathering in Portumna.

Hi,
I have Maddens from Kilkooney near Mountshannon & Whitegate. When my family left there 1846-1850, it was part of Galway. Margaret Madden was born about 1830 to Patrick (?) Madden and Kitty Minogue (second husband Patrick Walker). She had a brother James (went to Memphis, Tenn.), sister Julia/Judith stayed in Ireland married John Coen, and Thomas born 1849 in Galway. Margaret is supposed to have come to the US with an aunt and uncle and entered through the port of New Orleans. On the trip up the Mississippi, the aunt died and has buried in the river. Margaret made her way to Cincinnati where she re-met Martin White whom she had known in Ireland. They married in Cincinnati but left a few years later, living in Rock Island, Il., Memphis, Tn, Davenport, Ia., before settling in Chicago in 1873. The name similarities in your posts make me wonder if we are connected. My DNA is on Ancestry (with my family tree) and Gedmatch.com. My gedmatch kit is A591818 and family tree is 6500476.

Hi Mary,
We do have a DNA match of just under 7cm. My Maddens moved from Galway to Hopkinton, MA, but then they got married in Chicago and moved to Rock Island. Might not be a coincidence that our branches were both in Rock Island and Chicago. We'll have to connect our trees!
My GEDmatch is A939085.
I'll send this thread to a cousin who is helping me research the Maddens and see if you match her, too!
Talk soon!
