My great great great Grandmother Mary Lowry Cassidy (Cassaidy) was born in Tuam 15 Aug 1829. Her US Iowa death record lists her parents as Thomas Lowry and Margaret Doeling.  She married Michael Cassidy born 15 Mar 1823 in Ireland. They had one son, Thomas born in approx 1852 in Ireland. Family were devout Catholics. Believe they migrated to the US between 1852 and 1854. First son born in the US Michael Jr. was born in Indiana in 1854. Family lore says that the family entered the US in New Orleans LA. I have not been able to find an immigration record, or any marriage or birth records through Familysearch. I would like to know if their are any records for Michael Sr. that indicate his parents and whether any Lowrys or Cassidys are still in Galway to which I might be related. Michael Sr.'s Tombstone indicates he was born in Millock Ireland, I am afraid this might be the Americanized version of the Gaelic name of the town in which he was born. Family lore also indicates that Michael Sr. may have gone back to Ireland during the Civil War and later returned to the US. I have found no records to date that prove this.  Thank you for your assistance.  Lori Fogarty

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I did a search (1847-1857) on Roots and could not find the baptismal record for Thomas with a father Michael. I also could not locate the baptismal record for Michael in 1823 (the closest were 1813 and 1830. Also, could not find the marriage record. Roots does not have all parishes in Galway

The RC parish registers were recently placed online by the National Library of Ireland. Here is the link to the Tuam register which goes back to the late 1700s. http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/1082  Here is the link to the general site.

I can't find a location in Ireland called Millock.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Lowry Family - Tuam Galway and Cassidy Family

    Hello Lori,

The degree of mobility of the Catholic community was very limited and marriages were often within the same or neighbouring parishes. Your Lowry connection to the Tuam area would suggest that the Millock you refer to may very well be Meelick, of which there are six within the Co. of Galway. Below is the form of the name and their respective civil parishes

    Meelick - Killosolan

    Meelick - Boyounagh

    Meelick - Meelick

    Meelick - Clonrush

    Meelick East - Tuam

    Meelick West - Tuam

Catholic Parishes for Meelick (ex Meelick East and West)

    Ahascragh (earliest records 1840 http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0535 ) , Boyounagh (earliest records 1838 http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/1051 ) , Fahy  (earliest records 1873), Clonfert (earliest records 1884) , and Mountshannon (earliest records 1846 http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0773 )

It would not be inconceivable that with my opening statement that your Millock could be either Meelick East or Meelick West as both are in the Civil Parish of Tuam.

Below are the NLI online parish registers for Tuam Catholic Parish you may wish to search and a possible Cassedy family of interest from the Tithe records in Tuam Civil Parish

  • Dear Lori

I am a Lowery living in Tuam but our family are not, to my knowledge, related to yours. My Lowery (or Lowry) connections come originally from Clonbur, Co. Galway and later Tuam when my great-grand-father moved here and married a Glynn from Kilbannon (the parish next to Tuam). As suggested above, the radius of travel experience for most people would be quite limited at that time so it is more than likely that people living within the same parish would marry. So, if nothing else you can eliminated that Lowery from your search. Both Roger and Patrick have been assisting you and make some  very relevant points. The Meelick option is another avenue to consider too.

Let us know how you get on and if you make any progress.

    Best wishes

  • Hi Lori- MOYLOUGH ,Co. Galway is not very far from TUAM and may have been Americanized as MILLOCK.It is also possible that the informant may not have been totally literate. Not everybody in Ireland could read and write in the 19th century.
