While I spell my name Lafy, I am certain Laffey is the proper way to spell it.

Looking for my relatives as I've came to a dead end over this side of the pond.

Oldest relative I can connect to here is Michael Lafy who was born in the early 1800's.

Can anybody help?

  • Hi Kurt, looking at old queries, around the time you mention I see only one Laffey in Longford and a Laff in Galway, we rely on church records at that remove, you can see the surname distribution here for free, Laffey is mainly Galway in the west of Ireland. https://www.johngrenham.com/surnames/

McLysaghts says the name was anglicised from the Gaelic as Flahy meaning ruler, from this there are variants, Lahiff from county Clare, Flahive in Kerry and Laffey from Galway.

Afraid that is the best I can do for you, McLysaghts Surnames of Ireland also refers me to his More Irish Families book but I have not been able to locate a copy.

    Regards
