My great grandfather is Patrick Hastry born Warrington around 1851. His father was John Hastry who was stated to be a steward. He may have been a land steward which I believe may not have been a popular choice of career. Or, he may have been a ship's steward. I have no idea which.
According to our censuses Patrick was born in Warrington and he married Margaret Lally daughter of Patrick Lally and Bridget Glyn. Patrick Hastry had lodged with the family in Warrington so my guess is that they may have originated in the same area in Ireland.
So far I have only found a few references to Hastry online but have no direct proof of any family connection.
Does anyone in the Galway community know of the Hastry family?

Hi there,
The only Warrington that I know of is in the United Kingdom. There is no Warrington in Ireland that I am aware of. The surname Hastry is also very unusual. Perhaps he was English? But married an Irish girl in Warrington. Lally and Glyn (or Glynn) are Irish names. Where did you hear of the Galway connection?
In Griffith's Valuation (1848-64), there are a couple of Hastry families - and both are in Co. Galway! http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNameSearch&familyname=hastry&firstname=First+Name&baronyname=&countyname=&unionname=&parishname=&Submit.x=0&Submit.y=0
Do you know where or when they were married?
If you know any more information, please add it to this message thread.
Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864 however. You can access the website here: http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm
You could also try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38). Microfilm copies of the books for all of Ireland are available at the National Archives of Ireland (NAI) http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/tithe-applotment-books-and-the-primary-griffith-valuation/ or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS).
Until you know a more precise location, it is difficult for me to recommend other sources.
Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

Thanks for trying to help. I have pursued the same leads that you have. I have found the Hastry name in Galway however, I cannot find any definite proof to verify the family connection. I was rather hoping that someone who may be connected to the family in Ireland may have knowledge of a Hastry family that moved to Warrington (England). That could then perhaps confirm the parish that they came from in Galway.
So far I only know from our censuses that they came from Galway.
Thanks again
Graham

hello Graham,
I am the grand daughter of John Patrick Hastry - family were in Galway before journeying to New York. However my understanding is the family originated from Somerset. Be great to know more of the genealogy.
Cheers Pamela
