I previously posted the following. We have recently found a birth certificate for one of James Collins childen that lists his place of birth as Claren Galway. I've Googled Claren which appears to be an area rather than a town. All ocuments we have give his birthplae as Galway - this is the first to give a location.
I'm pretty certain there are no records of James Collins or his family in Galway. I've been in contact with the two genealogy societies there in the past and searched many data bases available over the internet.
We are looking for information on Irish ancestors. Our James Collins was convicted in Galway 1847 and was transported to New South Wales in Australia in1849 on the Havering. He stole two shirts in the company of Martin Devine both aged 16 years. Both were transported for 7 years.
James parents were James Collins and Mary Mallany or Mallanery.
We have not found any records in Galway relating to this family nor do we know where they came from in Galway. James Collins marriage and death certificate say he came from Galway.
James married Margaret Ryan from Tipperary in Sydney NSW in 1858 and had 10 children who survived him when he died in 1895. My great grandfather was his third child, John Collins. Both Margaret and James were illiterate.

Many thanks for leaving your genealogy message. Out of interest how sure are you of the place names. Claren Galway could be Caltra, Ballinasloe Co Galway or Clare Galway?
The surnames Mallany could be Mullery?? I have not heard of the surname Mallany!

As James Collins was illiterate others completed the documents we have. He would have given people information. He has consistently given his birthplace as Galway. Claren only appears on one document - again not written by him - the registration of the birth of a child.
We have two spelling for Mallany, the other being Mallanery. The first occurs on his marriage certificate, the second on his death certificate. Given both he and his wife were illiterate errors in spelling are likely as the names are taken down and spelt by another person ditto with Claren.

I checked a list of all the Townlands in Galway and find a Clarinbridge in the Civil Parish of Stradbally. I suggest you try there. The LDS library likely has a microfilm of the parish records and you can view them at your nearest Familty History Center. Or try Ireland Roots online (more expensive though).
