I am looking for Irish relatives of Thomas Connolly (born in either 1793 or 1803) in Galway and his wife Mary Waldron from Roscommon (born in either 1799 or 1805). Thomas and Mary were married in Newbridge County Kildare in 1825. They had 4 children - all born in County Kildare - Patrick (born 1827), Catherine (born 1829), Mary (born 1834) and Michael (born 1837).

Thomas, Mary and their 4 children emigrated to NSW, Australia as Bounty Immigrants aboard the ship "Premier" which departed from Plymouth on 2 April 1840.

Thomas' parents were Michael Connolly and Mary Quin. Family folklore has it that Michael was jailed in Galway Gaol for 4-5 years during the 1798 Irish Rebellion - he was accused of being a book-keeped for the rebels. The family had a lot of property before the Rebellion but it was seized by the British following the Rebellion.

We assume that Thomas had siblings but we have no record of them.

Clare Doyle asked me to look at your message.

As I'm sure you already know, there are very few church records available back to 1800 particularly in the western counties such as Galway and Roscommon. I looked at Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie and could not find a Thomas Connolly/Connelly baptismal record in Co. Galway from 1790-1808.          ( FYI-There were 3 in this time period in Co. Roscommon).

I did have more success with Mary Waldron in Co. Roscommon. There are three baptismal records on Roots in Roscommon: 1801, 1802 and 1805. Without knowing the parents names, it will be hard to determine if any of these records are for your Mary Waldron.

Roots is a pay site and they now ask that you get a subscription to view transcriptions of church records.

Let me know if you have further questions.

  • Hello... I am a distant current day descendent of the Connolly's.  Below is a link to an article on Patrick Connolly and his family which you might find interesting.    http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/111297965?searchTerm=Michael%…; Thanks Kate

  • Hi Kate

Many thanks for your reply. I was just wondering whether you are an Australian descendant and, if so, which member of the family is your ancestor (ie Patrick, Catherine, Mary or Michael). My husband (also named Patrick Connolly) is a descendant of Patrick Connolly. His father was Edmund who was the youngest child of Thomas who was the eldest child of Patrick & Maria. I have compiled quite a lot of information on the descendants of Patrick & Maria which I am happy to share if you are interested.

    Kind regards

    Kay Connolly

  • Hi Kay,

My grandmother is Moya Connolly (currently 94 years old) who is the eldest daughter of George Patrick, who was the son of William (Bill) Augustus, who was the son of Patrick, who was the son of Thomas and who was the son of Michael.

I am living in Brisbane along with the rest of my immediate family.

I recently received a copy of the Connolly Family tree from a cousin (Gerard Connolly in Taree who in turn received it from Bill Connolly in Sydney) - I will send you a copy over the Easter break when next in front of my PC - could you provide your email address?  This document is an interesting read however it says my grandmother died in 1953 which is incorrect.  The document does include mention of your husband's family.

    Where abouts are you based?

Have a lovely week Easter break.

    Thanks

    Kate Connors

  • Hi Kate

Pat and I currently live on our macadamia farm on the Central Coast of NSW. We lived in Sydney until Pat retired 18 months ago and our youngest child finished high school and headed off to University in Adelaide. I am in touch with Bill Connolly quite often so I may have seen the document you refer to but would love to get a copy just in case. Our email address is pandkconnolly@gmail.com. My version of the family tree includes your grandmother and her 4 children: Marie, Robin, John and Garry Gray but I don't have dates for their birth. Also I don't have details of their children (ie your generation). If you could send me your document, I will update mine and then send you a copy.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Best regards

    Kay Connolly
