I am looking for help from anyone that might have information on Fahey/Fahy family members from Headford or Mountross. Through DNA I have found that I match a line that is coming out of this area. I am looking for information on family of my great-grandfather, John Patrick Fahey, who was born around 1870 in Ireland and immigrated to the USA before 1890. He was apparently estranged from his Fahey family and never spoke of them to his wife and children. I have been looking for my Fahey ancestors (his family) for over 15 years and am hoping that the DNA has finally led me to the right area. On his citizenship papers, it says that he was born in "something" ford. I'm hoping Headford is the place. His mother may have been a Connell. His father may have been Joseph.

If anyone can help me find my missing link I will fly to Ireland personally to thank you!

Mountross is about 6 kilometers south of Headford. Emigrants usually said there were from the nearest big town or village rather than their own townland. However, there are ten other townlands in Co. Galway that end in "ford" none as large as Headford.

Mountross has six Fahey/Fahy households in the 1901 census. No Fahey/Fahy records in Headford town.

Church records for that area unfortunately start in 1880.

I checked the civil birth index records for the Tuam registration district which includes your area of interest and there are two John Fahey/Fahy records. There are also 1869 and 1871 records.

Copies of civil records cost around 4 euros each from the General Register Office. If you want to go that route, let me know and I will forward instructions and the index records.

Let me know if you have questions.

  • Roger,

Thank you for trying to help. Unfortunately, with such little known/accurate information about the family and the specific area they came from, this search has proven to be a real challenge. I find that I grasp at any straw I can find.

I've looked at the civi records index you mentioned on Familysearch and see the two John Fahys. Perhaps I will have to try that route if I don't get any other leads.

I feel more confident in this area due to the dna match that I have made...hopefully it will lead me to the right solution.

    Thanks again.

  • Roger, I am trying to reach you again to find out if you could tell me how to go about getting a copy of the civil registration information for John Fahey 1870 Tuam. This is the one that would be listed in Volume 4.

  • Wendy:

I was working on another Fahey message and just happened to notice that you sent me a question last July. Unfortunately, we had a systems problem last summer and fall which prevented a notification to me (or anyone) when a comment was posted. Hopefully, you found out how to get a copy. If not go to this link https://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx print out the birth form and fill out the form to the best of your ability. Make sure you ask for a copy only which costs around 4 euros. Include the info from the index record: registration district, year of birth and Volume and page number. You have to mail your request to Ireland (address provided whne you print the form) but you can ask GRO to e-mail the copy back. I use my credit card number and never have an issue.
