Hello!

I'm currently researching my Great-Great-Grandfather - Martin Edward Kelly b. Nov 10(?) 1861. to Edward K. and Bridget Geraghty/Garrity.

I have definite DNA matches for Kellys originating from the Bulluan/New Inn area.

I've found NO matches for a Martin (or any other children) born to Edward/Bridget in the indexed RC records for either the Clonfert or Tuam diocese.

(I did find birth records in Kiltormer for an Edward Kelly & Bridget Kelly - Margaret Aug62, John May64, Bridget May66 - but assuming my Martin info is correct, they wouldn't match.)

I did find a marriage record for Edmund & Bridget Geraghty (although the index entry is "Guaghty")  m. March 1845 in Killoscobe.

 - An 1851 census search was done by (their daughter?)  Mary Kelly Mulry  (of Balliasloe)  for Edward & Bridget Kelly in Ballaghnasgrosheen (Entry spelling = Ballynagrosheen)

- There is a Griffith's entry for Edward in 1855.

 - There are 1901 and 1911 entries for a widowed Bridget Kelly living in Ballaghnagrosheen

  1901:

Bridget/ age 80  (b. 1821)

son Patrick/ 40   (b. 1861)

wife Winifred

&Children

The 1911 records list Bridget's age as 97 and Patrick's as 70 - which are inconsistent, and could be errors.

It also lists another daughter of Bridget - Honora age 61 (b 1850)

There is also a Michael Kelly (b1856) living nearby, as well.

I'm wondering if anyone can help in confirming whether my Martin was born to this family?

The location certainly seems to fit my clues...there are a number of Geraghty names in Killoscobe. Also, there are Concannons and Mannions,  names that I keep running across in trees that match my Kelly DNA hits.

One other bit of info I have - a US death record lists Martin's birthplace as "Ballangh".   At first, I thought this to be a misspelling of "Bulluan", but as I discovered the entries for Ballaghnagrosheen...I wonder if  "Ballangh" was a shortened entry.

Thanks for any help you might provide!

  • Hi Miriam!

    Thanks so much for looking!

Martin emigrated in 1881, by my records. The inebriated gentlemen was likely a cousin! Ha ha!

The rationale for the age discrepancies certainly makes sense.

Do you know if Martin Curley is still involved with this site?  I recently joined XO, and saw his past posts in the Killoscobe board.  Yesterday, while poking around the Ancestry message board -for the first time in quite a bit - I ran across an old repy of his.  I clicked on his profile and found that he manages 2 DNA tests that are matches to me!   I took a look at his (expansive!) East Galway tree, but nothing stood out as an obvious connection.  I had planned to send him a message on Ancestry today.

  • Killascobe Query Kelly of Killoscobe

    Hi Don

I am the admin of Killascobe parish and pleased to answer your query

Looking at the information that you have given it looks likely that the Kelly family you are researching still live in the area

Edward Kelly b1888 to Patrick and Winifred nee Fahy is the oldest boy and therefore points to his grandfather being Edward as well

Edward married Sarah Warren and their son lives in the family home

I'll make the family aware of your query and hopefully confirm the connection

  • Hi all, I’ve recently found this page and recognise some of the names. Mary Kelly Mulry was my husband’s great grandmother. My father-in-law Martin Mulry is quite well and will be 96 in a few weeks. He remembers visiting his grandmother Mary along with his dad, John Mulry, when he was 8 years of age. They went over from the north of England to Ballagh, Menlough to stay at the family home.

I have found reference to a Martin Edward Kelly in USA during my research and the photo I saw seemed to be very like my husband’s grandfather. I hope this helps. Best wishes, Judith Mulry
