Hello!
My name is Chris Manning, but my gt-gt granfather was Dennis Mannion of Kilbride Parish, Roscommon - we think probably from Corbo. Dennis was born around 1798, and came to England as a young man, initially finding work digging the new docks in East London. He unaccountably 'volunteered' for the Royal Navy in 1823 - that is to say that he certainly woke up in it one morning! Navy clerks being what they were didn't understand (or care much) what Dennis's surname was, so they wrote one they did understand! Dennis could neither read nor write, and what little English he may have had would have been delivered in a heavy brogue, so there was a communication problem!
Dennis served until 1828, after which he married and had two sons, Thomas in 1833, and John (my gt-grandfather) in 1834. However, by 1851 he had lost the use of his legs, and was entitled to admission to the Royal Naval Hospital at Greenwich, where he died in 1859 of Pthisis.
Our family history starts with Dennis, as we are unable to link him with his parents or siblings. Any information or suggestions would be most welcome!
