I am trying to locate information regarding Peter Murray (died Derrywee, Adrahan 17 Feb 1904) and Bridget Deviney (Deviny) and their families. Peter and Bridget were married in the Gort district 1878. We believe they had 11 children between 187 and 1898 - Julia Agnes, Mary, Bridget, John, Margaret, Catherine, Michael. Lizzie, Patrick Joseph, Kate, Michael. Margaret (Maggie) and Lizzie migrated to Autralia around 1910. Other family members relocated to Iowa however we're not sure if any remained in Ireland. .
My grandmother Margaret (Maggie) Cleary (nee Murray) mentioned a place called Chevy Chase as where she grew up. I have been able to identify the area as Derrywee. The 1901 census shows Bridget living in a house at Derrywee West. She was listed as head of household with 5 of her children and a sister named Mary Deviney (described as an idiot on the census form). Unable to determine Peter's whereabouts at that time - records indicate he died Feb 1904. Recollections from family members indicate there had been talk of an incident surrounding his death but nothing more was known.
There is evidence that Bridget married John McDonagh 1905 following Peter's death and was living with John and son Michael at Derrywee during 1911 census. Bridget migrated to US in 1914 with two of her children and her name is recorded in passenger lists as "Murray". She lived in Council Bluffs with her daughter Julia until her death in 1947.
I would be very grateful for any information that may relate to these families.
Regards
Judy

Judy:
The first record below is the civil death index record for Peter Murray. The second record below is the civil marriage index record for Peter and Bridget (which you may have already). If you want to get copies of these records, you need to contact the GRO. Go this link http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx
Hit the links for marriage and death certificates in English. A screen will likely come up asking for a User Name and Password. Hit cancel and the form should appear. Print the forms and fill them out and provide the GRO with the info on the index records (date of event, registration district and volume and page number). Make sure you only ask for a copy which should cost around 4 euros each. You can ask the GRO to e-mail the copies to you. The death record will show cause of death and other info. The marriage record will show the names of the fathers of the bride and groom and where they lived in 1878.

Hi Judy,
I am delighted to hear from you and I will see what I can find out here about your relatives over the next few days.
I did take a look at rootsireland for Margaret Murray's Baptism record.
the details given are

D.O.Baptism 18/Feb/1885
Address Derawee
Parish/district Peterswell
Father Peter Murray
Mother Bridget Deviny

Sponsor 2 Bridget Collins.
I also could not find anything about Peter Murray at the time of the 1901 census. The Irish census of 1901 has no Peter Murray in Ireland at the time.I am sure you have found this out already.
I have had a brief look for court records /Wills /Newspaper reports on Peter Murray but I have not found anything.
Rootsireland has the marriage record of John McDonagh and Bridget Murray.
Date of Marriage 06 /March/1905

Keane's pound is just up the road from Derrywee.
Regarding the name Derrywee is an attempt to record the irish name in english phonics In Irish it could mean yellow oaks.As the area would have been wooded originally.
Regarding Chevy Chase You can see on This site Kilbeacanty reaching out that Chevy Chase was a hunting lodge in Lahardaun a neighbouring townland in Kilbeacanty.See townlands. It is a coincidence that the Cooneys query( also from Australia )also meantioned Chevy Chase.
Have you any other stories or folk memories about Kilbeacanty?Have you a family tree for Margaret and Lizzie?
Looking forward to hearing from you
Aine

New to the site, my name is Michael Divney, live in the USA and I'm told my ancestors came from Galway or County Claire, just getting started on researching my family's history in Ireland. I realize this is a few years after the original post but I think there's a good chance I'm related to the Diviney's in the post above. Fun to read about this, hope to learn more about our roots. Cheers

Hello Judy,
I have done a lot of research on that area because of connections to two names - Mannion/Mangan, and Donohue, the names of two of my great grandparents. My great uncle John Mangan would have been virtually a next door neighbour of your forbears, living in the townland of Kains pound, also called Bunnaglass. He was married to a Mary Deviny c. early 1850s. One of his daughters Kate married Patrick Burke who lived there with his family until the 1930s, when it came to be owned by John Moran whom I believe also seems to have acquired your forbears' place. It is difficult to establish what if any connection there could be between our families but they were certainly neighbours. In the research I have done I have often wondered whether the McDonaghs were in fact Donohues - there was much name changing or editing in those days. You may have views on these names, Regards, Deirdre Carroll, Dublin, Ireland.
