Is there a Coolbain townland in Kilbacaenty? Under the impression that that was where my grandparents were from? Also I am wondering what happens to old messages on this board because I can't find them. I click on See All and all the messages disappear. And I have seen two different ways on official sites to spell Kilbacaenty!
Thank you,
Barbara Clark

I dont see a townland named Coolbaine in Kilbeacanty civil or Catholic parish - closest seems to be a townland named Cloondine. See the entry for the townland on the placename database. You can see a list of all the townlands in the parish at this link
You should be able to see previous message posts for the parish at this link, there are about two pages of messages.
The placename database includes some of the spelling variations for Kilbeacanty, see the 'open scanned records' link. The images are quite small but I can make out a few - including Kilbeacantan, Killecanty etc. The variations are all Anglicised versions of the name in Irish which is 'Cill Bheaganta'.
I see any townland named Coolbaine in Co. Galway, only spelling that comes close is a 'Coolbaun' which is in Killimorbologue civil parish, and located between Loughrea and Banagher (King's Co.). Kilbeacanty civil parish is located to close to the town of Gort close the the border with Co. Clare.

Barbara-Drummin is actully the the townland you need to look at. Births inthe parish register as COOLBANE(Coolbaun)-show up in the Civil records as Drummin whe cross referenced post 1864 when Civil records began.-Liam Irwin

Liam--I checked a Drumminlough which was in the Griffiths but no Mullens. I did find them in the 1901 and 1911 census and Bingo! the townland was Drummond! Thank you. Still wonder why they aren't in the GE?

Thank you for trying but no that link just shows "no messages". It's ok, if I go back to "find communities, type in Galway, and then hit Kilbaecanty, I get the message boards. The Facebook site is great. Anne, I also have a lot of information on my Mullins family. My gf Peter came to San Francisco. His father was Fergus and his grandfather was Bryan. What I am curious about is their wives. Fergus was married to Catherine Gormally (Gormerly??) and Catherine mother was "Miss Lochery". I wish I could find John Gormally (Catherine's father) and Miss Lochery's marraige so I could give her a first name. Bryan's was married to a Nelly Ford (Forde) and I know nothing about her family or such. Think she was from Kilmacduagh. (Did I spell that right)! I have a funny story. I was dining at the DunGuaire Castle and met a lady from Kilbaecanty. She told the waitress how she "was friends with Mary Anne Mullins"! And low and behold I won the Claddagh ring and the waitress introduced me as an American with roots in Kilbaecanty. Anyhow, thank you for your help. This is a wonderful site and you all are so generous with your time. Still wonder why there are no Mullins in the Griffith's

Hi Barbara,
This is a link to John Mullins birth in 1864 to Fergus Mullins & Catherine Gormley, of Coolbane.
Link to Griffiths showing Fergus Mullen in town of Gort next to Edmund Ford, Catherine Cornenly 2 doors away which may be relevant

Hi Barbara,
Do you have Fr.Charles Durkin's research into the Deely's and Mullins families?

Anne, you are definitely clairvoyant!!!! I do have that tree of Fr. Charlie's in my "stuff"! I'll have to check out the Deely's because I also found an old picture of two of my aunts with two Deely girls (they looked like teenagers) at the San Francisco world's fair in 1915. I think they were my mother's first cousins--not sure!
I wish Fr. Charlie had dug more into the past. I so want to find out more about Catherine's Gormally family and also about Nelly Ford and "Miss" Lochery. I did write to the now owner of T.Mullins' pup in Gort but he never replied. Probably has no idea who this strange woman from Nevada could be! Plus I don't think any of the present Mullins know me or remember this side of the family.
If you hear anything about the Mullins' women I sure would appreciate it. This site is a lot of fun. It is so interesting exploring the land where my four grandparents once lived. I was over in September and just took a real quick look around the towns as I was with two lady friends and all they wanted to do was go to Scotland! But I'll be back, hopefully with my brother Bob who can give me a better tour!

Hi Barbara,
There are direct Mullins descendents in Kilbeacanty.Would you have any folk memory of how or why some ended in SF?Brian Michael and Peter died in S.F.
Also I came across another Mullins from Coolbane in Kilbeacanty.A Michael Mullins who married an Anne Casey. They were having children before Michael Mullins son of Fergus and Catherine was born.
One thing of note is that one of the witnesses at a baptism is Catherine Gormody (I presume is Fergus's wife Catherine Gormerly) The other witness is Michael Taniane .One of Thomas and Kate's children married a Tannion. You have to recall that english was probably their second language.
From the same location and the use of Catherine as a witness I think there is a case to be made that this michael and Fergus were brothers. But that is a guess.
You may have seen my comments elsewhere about Lochrey how locally that would be pronounced as 'Luke ree' It is a name associated with the people who were driven out of the north at the time of the battle of the yellow ford -when the Orange Order was formed. An Ultach (Ulster) name,I think I have an article on this site about them.

Barbara -- I am the great-grandaughter of Peter Mullins, who married Jane Lysa(u)ght in San Francisco. Fr. Charles Durkin was my father's first cousin.I met with several of my Mullins cousins in T Mullins in Gort about 25 years ago. There was a young man at that time about 30 or 40 who had come to San Francisco to meet US Mullins. My husband and I were fortunate enough to be invited out to the family's home for dinner and met an assortment of cousins. We were able to walk down to the old home where my great-grandfather, Peter, was born.I don't think Fr.Durkin got any further into the past further than the family tree you have. Sadly he died in the last decade. There is an SF Mullins descendant (most of the children of Peter and Jane were girls) who has had a house in Galway for many years, and he may know more. But if you are related to Fergus Mullins and Catherine Gormally, we are related. I am just starting out on my search and am working on my surname now. My grandmother was a Mullins.

Hi Denise,
I had to dig out Fr. Charley's family tree to check on "Denise". Besides my sister Gerry's dtr Denise there is a Gartland and a Casey! So I am guessing you are one of these!
The Irish cousin you have who has a house in Galway is my brother. Please EMail me -- bclark9216@sbcglobal.net. I am so delighted that another member of the family is interested in our heritage! I did some DNA with Ancestry and Gedmatch and have found all sorts of connections on my father's side but few on my mother's (Aileen Mullins Branick). The Brannicks are extremely interested in tracing roots but I've noticed that the Mullins/Lysaghts not so much. Anyhow, would love to chat! I can tell you a bit about Jane Lysaght!
