My g-g-grandfather was Cornelius LOUGHERY was born 15 July 1832, reportedly near Gort, Co. Galway, possibly the child of "Martin and Katie". Cornelius emigrated to the USA in about 1846-49. He died in Wisconsin in 1898. We believe his parents Martin and Katie did not emigrate to the USA.

 Jane Hillery GARDNER (b.7 Sept 1835, Lisdoonvarna area, emig. 1846 <?>, d. 1917 Wisconsin, m.
Cornelius LOUGHERY, in 1856 in Cherryfield, Washington Cnty, Maine, USA);

Jame GARDNER and Bridget HILLERY (parents of Jane Gardner) are believed to have not emigrated to USA.

Would love to hear from anyone knowing of this Loughery family or having connections
to it! thanks much, Mary Wegner.

Husband & I will be in Galway & Clare area this May 23 to June 6.

  • Hi Mary

The only Loughery / Loughry born around 1832 in Galway on www.rootsireland.ie/ is Anne 1836.

However the father is not Martin & mother not Katherine.

You need to purchase credit to view the record on rootsireland but it will have the parish and POSSIBLY the parents' names.

No luck on IGI or www.irishgenealogy but findmypastireland.ie has some Cornelius Loughrys but it is a pay site also.

  • Hi ColCaff,

Thank you for your response & your suggestions. It really does help the search to get others feed back & thoughts on where & how to look.

We are not 'positive' about the Martin & Katherine so it's possible Anne would be a good person to follow.

Again thanks for your help & I'm sure we'll have more questions.

  • Hi Mary

    Thanks for getting in touch.

There a few Loughreys listed in Griffiths evaluation 1855 for Gortacarnaun.

    http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNameSearch&familyname=loughery&firstname=&offset=20&countyname=&parishname=&parishname&unionname=&baronyname=&totalrows=82&PlaceID=0&wildcard=

Strangely most of the last few contacts have concerned families from Gortacarnaun!

It is in the parish of Kilbeacanty 3 miles outside Gort.I have checked findmypast.ie for you and the Cornelius Loughrey that are  on record there are born later (roughly 1880s) sometimes dying at one year old.

There are also Loughrey families buried in Shanaglish graveyard (No.8 and 28) http://www.celticcousins.net/ireland/cembeagh.htm

people from Gortacarnaun were often buried in Shanaglish.

Could I ask what do you know of how he got to the US? Did he go through Canada?Do you have any photographs or letters to or from him?Where is he buried?

    Regards

    Anne

I will get back to you later in the week.

  • Good Morning Ann (at least it is morning here in WI)

Thank you for your note & suggested sites....the CelticCousins is a new one for me.

We really don't know how or when Cornelius came to the USA. Our first finding of him was in the 1850 Census records in Maine...we can't locate him on any ship records. It is possible he came to Canada...guess we haven't looked in to that area. Cornelius married in Maine in 1856 (found marriage banns) & he & his wife came to Wisconsin after that.

We don't have letters or photos that I know of...I do have a Loughery photo album made by one of Cornelius' granddaughters but there are no labels so I don't know who is who and all 'older' generations who might know -are gone now.

My Cornelius is buried here in WI in a town called Shiocton, somewhat north of where I am...I've visited his gravesite a few years ago.

I look forward to exchanging any information we might both have or find.

My direct e-mail is: mcwegner@prodigy.net (if you'd prefer)

Again thank you & will stay in touch.

    Mary
