Looking for Cooley family

rootsireland.ie has records of births/baptisms of Michael Thomas & Martin Cooley in Galway.

I don't know if you've looked at this site (it is a pay site).

I searched baptisms/births 1845 + - 10 years for surname Cooley and each first name and got 1 Thomas - 1839, 1 Martin (Coolee) 1846 & 3 Michaels 1837, 1842 & 1853.

If you think 1 of the records might be one of your Cooleys you could purchase that one to get the parents' names and the name of the parish. You could then add those criteria and search for the other 2 to see if they match.

Thank you for getting in touch with us.Strangely I have been Looking at Cooneys of Lahardaun for the last while.One of their links led to Gortacarnaun a neighbouring townland.I have limited succes looking for Cooley.

I have searched the Applotment book (1825) Griffiths valuation  approx 1855.Without finding any cooleys.However these books only recorded head of households and above a certain landholding.The census of 1901 has Cooleys in Ballycahalan

in loving memory of Mary Cooley who died (illegible due to crack on stone) age 93 R.I.P. this is plot 261.I would guess this is from the 19th century

and Plot 275 Patrick Couley and Poserity 1813.(Napoleon was still alive)

There is also the probability of marrying into other families.The Deelys and traceys from the census records.

I have checked what records I can to make sure there was no condfusion between Cooney and Cooley but it is possible that transcribers may have made mistakes.

Regarding parish record what is available is the following

 Kilbeacanty parish from 1854 ? 1900 for birth/baptism, 1881 ? 1900 for marriage, unfortunately a death registrar was not maintained within this parish.

There is one Baptism cert for a Mary Anne Cooly in Kilbeacanty whose family lived in Lahardaun in 1881!I could find no records of anyone other than Burkes living there until this.Church Baptism Record

The folk memory of the place is of a few families living there but I cannot document this.There is nobody there now.

Regarding Rootsireland.

If you have the names you can reduce the search to parish level.I have done this with Martin,Michael and Thomas and I have not found any record in Kilbeacanty parish or surrounding parishes.

I will need to do some investigating on this over the next few days to see what I can find.There may be other sources locally.

Could you let me know where you got your information that they came from Kilbeacanty Gortacarnaun or their names or that they emigrated?Or when they were born?Do ou have any letters or family stories from that time?

Hello Col.  Thank you for that information.  I think the birth years would have been around 1836 +/- as the brothers emigrated to the US around that year.  I will check out rootsireland using only the surname.  I think I have been too specific in my searches and wasn't coming up with any information.  Have a great day Lucy

I live in the US.  My grandfather, James Cooley, grew up in Antrim (not sure if it was the parrish or just the county).  He was born in 1904 and went originally to western Canada in the early 1920s, eventually making his way to Norristown, PA (USA).  He had a brother John who also came over, probably around the same time.  They may have had another brother named Felix, but I'm not sure about that part.  I believe that at one time James and John owned a farm in Antrim.

My grandmother, Mary Treanor, lived in Tryone.  I know very little about her, other than she was married to James Cooley.

If you know anything of any Antrim Cooleys, please do let me know.

Hi everyone,

I am not sure if this is the same Cooley family line....My great great grandfather is Martin Cooley, born in Ireland in 1855 in Ireland. He married married Mary Cooley, and from there on, the family settled in Buffalo, NY by 1900. I did purchase the roots ireland website, but did not find much luck, I will keep trying. I am going to keep reading the threads and try to put the pieces together.

Found a birth registration of Thomas Cooley son ofMichael Cooley and Mary Cooley (formerly) Broderick in 1876 December 15th .Their address is given as Keane's Pound.Michael is described as a farmer.
