I am seaching for the birth record of my great-great-grandmother MARIA BARLOW, who emigrated to Canada around 1840. Her tombstone says she was born in 1834 and her death record says her birthday was March 17. (a bit suspicious!!) She died in 1913. We were always told she was from Roscommon, Ireland, but I have not found any records of her there so far. Perhaps she just told people the name of the closest big town they may have heard of during that time period. She had a younger sister ANNIE CATHERINE BARLOW, born in 1847, who also came to Canada and died there in 1933. Her father was JOHN BARLOW and her mother was a COLLINS according to what we know. She most likely had other siblings, but we are not aware of their names. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Lynn

There are 3 John Barlow entries in the Griffith's Valuation in 1855 in and around the Roscommon side of Galway in 1857:

I have not tried any of those options, I am just starting to research the Irish side of my family. Maria was already in Canada by 1854 as she got married in Ontario that year for certain......one census says she emigrated about 1840, but I think 1850 is more likely......nothing definite there though. I would say that her father would be about 45 in 1855 and her sister Annie about 10.....just predicting here. HIs wife was a Collins....perhaps Mary, again not for sure. This side of the family is so unknown, but everyone always said Maria was from Roscommon.......which is probably just the largest city to where she lived I would think. I will look at the first link soon and then the other two ideas. Are they fairly straight-forward and are they free or is there a cost? It is also very possible that Maria's mother died and that her father remarried and Annie has a different mother. I think this may be why Maria came to Canada so young. I suppose the potato famine was around that time too and could have been a factor.
