Ullick Burke

I was unable to find a baptismal record for Ulick or Hyacinth on Roots Ireland. There was a 1785 Church of Ireland baptismal record (see below) but I presume this is not your ancestor. RC records back to 1800 are very scarce in Co. Galway.

The 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household for Killora civil parish (which includes Craughwell) shows two records for a Hyacinth Burke. Not sure if either is for your ancestor http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/galway/killora.htm

Craughwell is a nice little village. There is a very nice pub called Rafterys in the middle of the main street.

You may want to consider autosomal DNA testing.

Hi Roger thanks for the reply. I do believe my cousin in England and I think this could be our relation. Proving it is the key. Clanricarde did sign off his postal application??? Please see the attached but not sure if it helps. It is the 1857 entry for a Hyacinth who I think is a grandson to our elusive Hyacinth and son of Ulick. I have taken an autosomal DNA test but how do I use it to prove the ancestry?

Not sure which company you tested with--Ancestry or Family Tree. Hopefully, you can identify some of your matches that also have Burke or Higgins or other ancestry from the Galway area near Craughwell or Tuam. Sometimes matches have more information on the family line. I have been able to break down one of my brick walls and one on my wife's side. Right now I'm in correspondence with someone who appears to be a fourth cousin back to Co. Down. You may also want to visit www.gedmatch.com  Gedmatch allows you to upload your raw DNA and see if you match someonw who tested with another company (and also loaded their data to Gedmatch). Gedmatch is a volunteer run site.
