This extensive message was posted to the IRO information line. I told Susan and John Quinn that I would post their message on the main message board so others could assist. I also found the birth record for Mary Anne on May 16 1894. See second record. Susan and John were provided with this record.

Thanks!

Roger

Hello, As we are planning our trip to Ireland, I came across the wonderful IrelandX0 site. I wonder if you could help us. We are searching for some information about John’s (my husband) grandmother (referred to as Nana in this document) Mary Ann Foley (Folan) from Galway, Ireland. Our understanding is that she was born on May 29, 1985 in Spiddal or Galway. Her parents were: Thomas Foley (Folan) (B. abt. 1870) and Bridget Delia Flaherty (Faherty) (B. abt. 1870) according to her marriage license In Portland, Maine, USA in 1915.

This we know for certain. https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/2786694:1961 Other documents from distant family members list her father as John Folan. Her father Thomas died when Nana was quite young, but we know very little else about him or his family. Nana always spoke of the tea house where she had grown up at 4 Henry St. in Galway and we have in our family collective memory that she loved to walk to Spiddal where her grandparents Patrick Flaherty (Faherty) and Anne Scanlon (Scanlan) lived and her mother had grown up. We are certain about 4 Henry St. in Galway and the marriage of her mother Bridget Delia to John Carr and the family they had together who still reside in Galway. One of John’s siblings has written to a cousin in Galway for many years; they became pen pals when they were young.

She has visited several times, but never done any genealogy research on Nana and the Folan-Flaherty family sides. Another memory that John and his siblings have is that Nana (Mary Ann Foley) told them that John Ford (Feeney) the movie director who did The Quiet Man movie, was a cousin from Spiddal, but once again they have no way of connecting links to the Feeney family, but they have always been huge fans of all of his movies.

Nana’s (Mary Ann Foley/Folan’s) mother and step-Father: Delia (Bridget) Folan (nee Flaherty (Faherty) remarried on 13 Oct 1901 to Thomas Carr of Galway. She passed away on 03 January 1950 and is buried in Galway, with her husband Thomas Carr and one of their daughters. We received this information from one of John’s cousins on the Carr side, whom we met a couple of years ago.

Mary Anne Foley (Folan) (Nana) D.o.b. May 29, 1895 in Spiddal or Galway, Ireland - we believe Deceased: 11 Apr 1986 in Portland, Cumberland County, Maine, USA (this is certain) Through other family members' genealogy research we have found these two Ireland Census. The 1901 Ireland Census shows Mary (6 y.o.) living with her widowed mother and two sisters, Margaret Mary (8 y.o.) and Delia (7 y.o.) http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Galway/Galway_West_Urban/Henry_Street/1375257/ The 1911 Ireland Census shows Mary (Nana- 16 yo) living at 4 Henry St. with her mother Bridget Carr (39 yo) and several half-siblings.. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Galway/Galway_West_Urban/Henry_Street/455419/ Nana’s father: John Folan B. 08 Nov 1869 (Thomas?)

The son of Coleman Folan, a small farmer and Mary McDonagh Folan is said to have passed away, but I have yet to be able to find any information on that individual or fact. Nana’s mother: Bridget Delia Flaherty The daughter of John Flaherty ’Faherty’ (B: 29 May 1845 Galway, Ireland D: Sep 1910 Galway, Ireland) and Ann Scanlan (B:18 Jun 1842, Ireland D: 26 Dec 1919 Galway, Ireland) Emigration: Nana, (Mary Ann Foley) emigrated to the US aboard the ship Parisian at the age of 18 (?). She left from the port of Londonderry, Ireland traveling with Norah Flaherty (whom she listed as a friend but I wonder if she was a cousin), as Nana’s mother was a Flaherty. The ship's log states that she arrived on the 22nd of June 1912 with a final destination of Portland, Maine, her recent address according to the ship’s log is listed as 4 Henry St, Galway where she had been living with her mother Delia and step-father John Carr, along with several half-siblings, which would match the 1911 census. We found the ship’s log, but but sadly did not save the link to the document, just a photo sadly.

Is there any chance that you could help us with some of this research? It would be marvelous to know more about John's family history and potential extended family.

Thank you so much. Best regards, Susan and John Quinn

  • Susan & John,

A search for a marriage record for Patrick Flaherty/Faherty and Anne Scanlan on subscription sites  www.rootsireland.ie and www.findmypast.ie was negative.

The surname "Scanlan" is recorded in the townland of Clynagh - Civil Parish of Killannin.

John Scanlan with a House, Offices and land - 1 acre-10 roods and 0 perches is recorded in Clynagh and there is a John Scanlan recorded in the townland of Barraderry - land only. Would appear to be the same person. It is likely that he is the father of Anne Scanlan?

Civil records in Ireland are from January 1st 1864. Protestant marriages from 1845.

  • Further information on previous Post.

Attached a record of the death of a Thomas Folan in Henry Street - Galway - 1901 - No. 99 on page and the marriage of Bridget Folan, Widow of Henry Street, Galway to Thomas Carr.

In regard to previous Post, the numbers given relate to the rental, not the land measurement.

Thomas Folan is recorded on his death record as being 34 years of age, this would indicate that he was born in the mid 1860's.

  • Hello everyone

Receiving this information so quickly is amazing. Thank you all so much for your help and information.

Would there be any records of John Flaherty and Ann/Anne Scanlon/Scanlan being married near Spiddal and having a daughter Bridget Delia ?

We also wonder what happened to Mary Anne Folan' siblings, Margaret Mary and Delia.  Are there other births recorded to Thomes Folan and Bridget Flaherty?

    Thank you so much,

    Regards, Susan and John Quinn

  • Hello! Anne Scanlon and John Faherty are my great grandparents. It is simply amazing that I came across your post and this site. My grandmother is Ellen Faherty Coyne O'Toole-(1878-1973)a sister of Bridget Delia Faherty Folan Carr. I'm new at the research. I was trying to find more info on the12 children of Anne Scanlon and John Faherty. I was stuck on Delia but you have provided great info! I had found Delia Bridget's daughter Ellen living with her widowed grandmother in the Census but little else.

I see that John Folans mother is Margaret Curran. She is most likely the John Ford connection as John Ford's mother is a Curran (Barbara Abbie Curran and John Feeney.) We are related on the O'Toole side as my other great grandmother was Kate Curran O'Toole. My brother and another sister have met the Carrs in Ireland. We are in Portland Maine.  I realize your post was in August and perhaps you have already taken your trip!
