Seeking information about Ellen (Coates) Curley, her husband, Daniel Curley, and Ellen's mother (we think) Bridget Coates who all emigrated to the USA in the 1850's.  Ellen's tombstone in Tremont, Pennsylvania, USA, states that she was from Parish Clontusket, County Galway.  She died on 15 December, 1865, aged 32, which means she was born in 1833.  We believe her maiden name was Coates.  Her husband was Daniel Curley, but I do not know if they were married in Ireland or after arrival in Pennsylvania.

Her mother (we think) was Bridget Coates.  Her tombstone says that she was 68 years of age when she died on July 18, 1860, in Tremont, Pennsylvania, USA, which means she was born in 1791 or 1792.  It states that she was from Parish Kiltormer, County Galway.  The tombstone was erected by John Coates her son.

When Daniel Curley was killed in a mining accident in approximately 1866, Ellen and Daniel's three sons were raised by John and Mary Coates.  We think that John Coates was Ellen Curley's brother, and that Mary Coates was Daniel Curley's sister, but have no proof of that belief.

Any help in tracing the Curley and Coates familes would be appreciated.  This message will also be posted on the Kiltormer Parish's message board.

Thank you for any help!  Ron Krell, Bremerton, Washington, USA - thecdr@comcast.net

P.S.  My wife and I will be visiting Ireland in early May.

    Hello Ron,

Go to www.rootsireland.ie and you will find the baptismal record for Ellen coates, mother Bridget in the parish of Clontuskert Co Galway in 1833.

You will need to register with this site (free) but you will have to pay approx €5 to view and print off this record.  Hopefully this will contain her parents names.

Once you have those names, then go to the baptismal search option , leave the first name blank and just put in the parents names.  Set your date range from about 1825 to 1855 or so.Click the search button and this should issue all the children born to this couple.  You will then know all her brothers and sisters.

Also when you have the names of both of Ellen's parents, you will then be able to perform a search for their marrige record on this site.  Plesae God it will contain their father's names.

I have looked for a marriage record for Eleanor but I can't find one so she must have gotten married in the US.

Will have a look for the Curleys now.

    Kind regards,

    Anne Dennehy

    Hello Ron,

In my last post I referred to Ellen as Eleanor. Sorry about that.

there are too many Daniel Curleys to know which one is yours.  It's difficult without a parents name .

I looked at www.castlegarden.org and put in the name Daniel Curley travelling approx 1850 - 1860.

I found one record for that, a Daniel Curley 15 yrs arrived on the 16th July 1853 on the DewittClinton.

I then went back to the search option and put in the surname Curley with same dates and it gave a list of all Curleys who arrived in that timeframe.  There were a number of people who arrived on the same day and I suspect they may all be brothers and sisters??

Have a look yourself and see what you think.  Or perhaps you have already done this?

  • Mary,

Thank you for your information on Daniel Curley and Ellenora Coates, the mother of his wife.  I am hoping to be placed in contact with and of the Curley families  who reside in the area - especially any who have traced their ancestry back to the mid 1800's.  I found elsewhere that there are 7 Curley families living in Kiltormer but have so far been unable to establish contact with any of them.

    Sincerely,

    Ron Krell
