Did Patrick and Bridget Lowry Loftus' kids remain in Clonbur?

I searched for civil death records on www.irishgenealogy.ie  and did not find a record for Martin in the Oughterard registration district. (There was another Martin Lowery in Ballydoolough with a large family who died in 1917). Also did not find a marriage record.

I did find a potential civil death record for Kate which shows she died in 1946 as a spinster. Here mice was the informant. You will have to sign-in to see the record.

Can I remind people exploring in the Clonbur area that in the 1930's a multi family migration from Clonbur to Co Meath occurred I have an article on the families involved ( somewhere) if anyone is interested ?

It is exciting when the names and dates in a newly found document line up with validated items you already have.  Roger, I believe you have found Kate; DOB to DOD match her age on death at 79 and her sister Bridget had a daughter Letitia - the niece mentioned present at Kate's death.  And I now know Letitia's married name of Burke.  Aside from the ins and outs of the letter "e" in Lowry I think you've done it.  Thank you.

There were eight Lowrys and two Martin Lowry's in the Ballydoologh 1911 census (see attached).  One had eleven children and then there was Martin 50 and Catherine 46.  I would guess that they both left the homestead at the same time and probably stayed local like Catherine must have done.  Having a sister Bridget in Clonbur it would seem logical they wouldn't move west.  It's possible Martin died at the homestead causing Catherine to leave.  Or they both left and lived together near or in Clonbur.  I doubt Martin got married.

My gene test with Ancestry.com describes me as "Connacht Irish."  That made me wonder if this Clonbur/Cornamona farm area has any early history.  There sure were a load of Lowry households listed in Griffiths over decades but I always suspected my family traced back to the Scotch/Irish ultimately.  Could it be their roots are deeper into the Irish soil of this area?        

janPeter Lowery moving to Scranton caught my eye, because my relations also moved to Scranton area.  Have you already looked at the census for that area?

 1920 Federal census for Scranton, PA:  Peter Lowery(58)/wife:Mary(57)/6 daughters and 1 son.  The next street over is:  Martin Lowery(44)/ wife:Catherine(44)/ and 6 daughters.  There are Healy's and Kanavey's nearby.

I just checked the one census from my GG Uncles profile page, and it may just be old news to you.

Yes Jan, Peter and Mary Lowry were my grandparents.  My search is for the Lowrys that remained in Ireland.  Thanks for your interest.

Paul,  I was browsing Griffith's Valuation in Clonbur, when last page went to Ballykine Lower, County Mayo,( PLU) Oughterard, (Barony) Kilmaine, (Parish) Cong.  Did you already know that Patrick Loftus was there?  The next page is too light to read.

Found several Hallorans and McDermotts to pass on to my cousins as well.

Yes.  A cousin was able to fill me in on my great-aunt Bridget and her husband Patrick Loftus in Clonbur.  One of their children actually visit the U.S. and updated us on their family back in Ireland.

2020.  This came across this site by accident again Re Lowry and Clonbur  Peters Grandfather Peter Lowry was my great grand uncle.My grand mother was Helena / Lena Loftus.I live in County Sligo . I am an artist and lecture at the Institure of Technology Sligo soon to be upgraded to a Technical University. I have a brother David Gilligan who lives in Richmond ,Viginia and is a consultant cardiologist. This should help track us down if we loose contact. gilligan.hilary@itsligo.ie

His father, your great grand father would be my great great grand father./ 2nd great grand father. I think that makes us second cousins once removed . My fraternal grandmother was Lena ( Helena ) Loftus who lived with us until she was 100 years old ! I have named my daughter Letitia after her sister.

I'm quickly acknowledging your message to let you know how happy I am to hear from you.  I've been researching Lowry history for a while (see link below) but found I had little information about the branches of our family tree that continued to grow back in Ireland.  I very much appreciate your help in my learning more about the Lowry/Loftus line if only to complete the family tree diagram I have so far.

Paul, what a fabulous presentation you put together.
My family includes Coyne, Halloran, and Moran. We find our Coynes in the area of Rosmuc but information points to them coming from the area of Clonbur where they held then lost their land. We are hoping to find more information on Patrick Coyne born c.1820 who married Catherine Geraghty.
My cousin Peadar Mannion lives in Rosmuc. He is delving into the Clonbur connection. Not sure if he follows this post so I will share your information with him.

A wondeful resource I found recently was a narrative format of the 1901 and 1911 census information for Clonbur.  For the first time I recognize my grand-aunt Bridget Lowry Loftus with her publican husband Patrick Loftus in a Clonbur residence with their nine kids.  https://heritage.galwaycommunityheritage.org/content/places/joyce-count…  

After having researched so many past relatives I realize that I miss knowing the personalities (the stories) of a great-grandfather tenant farmer who raised kids during the famine.  As a result I now prepare narratives around any photos I have of immediate family as well as aunts and uncles before they fade away.  I've called cousins to tell me stories about their parents that I transcribe into digital "newspaper-like" biographies that I store as PDFs.  I've even created a portrait family tree web page so that when you click on the person's name the biography page appears on the left.  (See attached sample)  Too many great stories about our relatives get said at the funeral parlor or church that should be kept along with all those photos in the shoebox.  With computers, we now have a method of creating digital memories of the personalities that "hopefully" can be duplicated and shared with future generations.

Or course, all the information I gained here on IrelandXO has been consolidated in the biographies that go with past relatives in my family tree. I just wish they left some of the stories.
