Hi, I am searching for any information on the Mullin family who lived in Letterdeen, Clifden. They lived in the farmhouse in Letterdeen which was turned into a bed and breakfast (don't think it is still operating). Patrick (unsure if middle name was Joseph) was born 1822 and he married Mary (nee O'Carroll). They emigrated to South Africa aboard the HMS Birkenhead in 1852. I am interested in any info regarding his parents, siblings, etc., should there been any available. Thanks, Trevor

Found the marriage of Patrick and Mary they married in Clifden on the 6th of March 1843, Patricks address at the time indeed Letterdeen. Witnesses Richard Walsh and Catherine Corbett.

There is Patrick Mullins baptised on the 13th of January 1822 in the parish of Rahoon, his parents address at the time of his birth was Annvilla. Rahoon is a good hour away from Letterdeen but this is the only Patrick born in 1822

The parents of the Patrick above were John Mullins and Mary Leonard, sponsors Elizabeth and Francis Leonard

  • Thank you so much for this, it is a great help. Is it coincedence or known that he Patrick (married on 06/03/1843) and the Patrick (baptised 1301/1822) could be the same person. You used Mullins as the surname (maybe because I used that in the title -- though I meant "The Mullins (more than one)" - but the surname is MULLIN. Would a child, who later lived in Letterdeen, be baptised in a parish that far away. In other words, was it common for farmers (think that was teh occupation) have moved so far. And what do you mean "Sponsors"

  • Hi,

Patrick Mullen and Mary Carroll married in the parish of Omey, Clifden on March 6th 1843, as already shown. Copy of church records attached.

Please see attached re naming - Mullen, Mullin, Mullins. Griffith's Valuation early 1850's has no "Mullen" recorded in Letterdeen.

This is always a problem where you have various spellings for the same surname. I relation to the surname Carroll, in that period the "O'Carroll" was not used except by influential people. This was political.

There is no Carroll recorded in Letterdeen in Griffith's, but that does not rule out the fact that there could be family there with that name. There are a number of Carroll families in Ballindoon parish, East of Clifden town.

In regard to the baptism of Patrick Mullen - Omey (Clifden) records are from 1838. See Omey, Diocese of Tuam.
