My name is Libby Lamour, from Johannesburg, South Africa. We have recently learned that my grandmother came from Connemara. Our information about her is sparse. She was known as Destah Cuthbert, but since she met my grandfather in London when they were both on the stage, we are not sure if this was a stage name or her real name. Other names on census takes were Mary and Barrett. It seems possible that her real name was Mary Barrett. I see some Barretts born in Clifden in 1882 - perhaps one of them is her. Can anyone give us some help??

Destah's husband was Arthur William Drummond Kendall of Brighton or London England. We have not been able to locate a marriage certificate or records ever. In 1905 he went to Canada by ship and a few months later she travelled by ship, and her name is then shown as Destah Kendall, so we assume they were married in England. I suppose it is possible but not likely, that they could have been married in Ireland. It was on the passenger list of this ship that we see that she came from Connemara.
My mother told me that Destah's mother was known as Auntie Max. This doesn't seem very helpful either as Max or Maxine is not an Irish name... but she was Irish. She was married to an O'Henry.

Found the husband he was born in April 1881 Brighton UK, so now we can look for a marriage
Found something but I am not sure when Destah and William married do you have an estimated year?
There is an Arthur William Drummond Kendall who married a girl with the surname Geddes or McCarthy (Inez I.A Geddes) in 1949, seems a bit late but you might be able to tell

Inez Geddes was Arthurs second wife still no sign of Destah.
Only thing I found so far is the birth of daugther Betty Joan in Manitoba Canada in 1908, mothers name on the birth cert is Destah Cuthbert so maybe this is her real name?
I have a couple more questions for you?
Do you know where and when Destah died?
Where did you find the Barrett name?
I am sure we will get there in the end :)

Hi. Sorry I'm joining this so late. I have a fairly extensive listing of Irish Cuthbert's, but the only Mary Barrett I have married a Michael Butler 28 Feb 1865 Ballina, Ballina, Mayo, Ireland.
