hi...I had posted several messages, and had communicated w/ Paula Kennedy a few times...and all this info has been lost.  I had to re-register this mornng.  I did notice this website was down for a few days...maybe I crashed w/ it.

So, here is my message anew:

I believe my ancestors were in Caltra.  My GG Grandparents were, I believe and not a whole lot of hard evidence to prove it, Maria or Mary Mannion and Patrick Mitchell.  I believe they started out in Galway City,  had my great grandmother, Elizabeth Mitchell, born 1862 and baptised at St Nicholas Combined N&E.  Patrick describes himself later twice as a tailor.  Perhaps, he learned his trade in Galway City.

  • Children’s birthdates of Mary (Maria) Mannion (Manning) and Patrick (Patricio) Mitchell
  1. 21 Sep 1862  Elizabeth St Nicholas Combined N&E, (this is my great grandmother)  witnesses Valentine Connelly and Mary Considine.
  2. 09 Apr 1866 female (Catherine?)
  3. 17 Apr 1868 Thomas  Clonbrock
  4. 15 or 21 or 23 Apr 1872 Mary (Maria) (per Patricio & Maria )RC Ahascragh and Killosolan, Galway, witnesses John Mitchell and Catherine Mitchell. Died at birth.
  5. 01 Jan 1874 Patrick Clonbrock
  6. 25 March 1876 Charles Caltra/Clonbrock aka 28 March 1876 Caroline aka Carolus (per Patricio & Maria ) RC Ahascragh and Killosolan, Galway witnesses John Ward and Cecilia Mitchell and sponser/informant to the birth, Kate Mitchell.
  7. 08 Dec 1877 Mary (first Mary died?) Caltra aka Maria (per Patricio & Maria ) RC Ahascragh and Killosolan, Galway witnesses John Mitchell and Catherine Mitchell and sponser/informant to the birth, Mary Elizabeth Mitchell (Lizzy Mitchell Guerin?).
  8. 15 Mar 1880 Joseph Caltra died at birth

Of note, the following children were witnesses:

  • Mary Elizabeth Mitchell (Lizzy)  -approx. 15 yrs. - sponsored  the baptism of her sister Mary Mitchell in 1877.
  • Thomas Mitchell, -approx. 16 yrs. - Lizzy’s brother, sponsored the baptism of his niece, Mary Josephine Gueran in 1884.
  • Maria Mitchell, Lizzy’s mother, was the informant on Mary Josephine’s civil birth registration.

Both on 1872 Mary’s birth, and on 1876 Charles’ birth, Patricio names “Tailor” as occupation. On Mary’s 1877, Patrick names “farmer” as his occupation.

Based on Irish tradition of naming children:  The parents of Patricio or Patrick could be Thomas and ? Mitchell and the parents of Maria Mannion Mitchell could be Patrick and Elizabeth Mannion or Manning.

This is the little bit of information I have as to what happened to these Mitchells, Mannions, Guerins:

  • My Great grandmother, Elizabeth Mitchell, married Cornelius Guerin, in the parish of Caltra, 21 Jul 1883, while living in MtBellows. Cornelius Guerin was born in Duagh, Co Kerry, in 1859 (parents Mary Heffernan and James Guerin).
  • Cornelius was in the RIC from 1881 – 1889.  I don’t believe the RIC knew he was married.
  • Cornelius and Elizabeth Guerin had my grandmother, Mary Josephine Guerin, 14 may 1884 in the parish of Caltra.  I don’t believe the RIC knew about Mary Josephine.  I don’t believe Mary Josephine lived w/ Cornelilus and Elizabeth for long.  She was sent to live in an orphanage in Toronto City, Canada.  I found Mary Guerin and a Mary Mitchell (Mary Josephine’s aunt, Elizabeth’s sister?) in the 1890 Canadian census.
  • Elizabeth and Cornelius Guerin immigrated to the U.S. in 1889, under the names Elizabeth and Cornelius Mitchell.  Cornelius left before he was formally discharged from the RIC.
  • Their daughter, Mary Josephine Guerin, immigrated in 1894 to the U.S. escorted by Patrick and Mary Mitchell.  Once in the states, I don’t believe she ever lived with Elizabeth (Lizzy) and Cornelius Guerin.
  • I don’t know what happened to the rest of the Mitchells.  There are probably a lot of skeletons w/ respects to Lizzy and Cornelius Guerin.  Rumor has it that Cornelius was not my grandmother, Mary Josephine’s, biological father.  My Grandmother said that her real father was her “uncle”.  Go figure that one out.  I have some theories…none of them pretty.  Cornelius Guerin was probably a bit of a rogue.

I would appreciated any further info on this family.

Best,

Kate Mackie Ashton nee Guerin
