i am looking for information re my paternal ancestors, Patrick Byrnes was born 28 February 1840 at Ballynakil, Co Galway. His father was Patrick Burns (or Byrnes) & Julia Cocks (or Cox) who married ?1839 Co Galway. Patrick's parents are Henry Byrnes & Mary Costello of Ballyclery. Patrick & Julia departed Ireland for New South Wales, Australia in 1841 leaving behind their infant son Patrick with either his paternal grandparents Henry & Mary or his maternal grandfather James Cox. Any further information re this family would be very much appreciated.

  • Hi Chris

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

Have you already had a look at rootsireland.ie to see what records are available for the family? Roots is a subscription site but you can subscribe now for as little as 24 hours.

One of the issues though with it will be the early period of the search as most rural parish records do not begin until after the 1850s/1860s as is the case with Ballynakill/Ballynahinch (1859 and 1863 respectively). As civil registration doesn't begin until 1864 there will be no state/civil birth-marriage-death record for the family members before that time.

You could have a look at the Tithe and Griffith's records to see if they provide anything further, though they are quite specific and refer only to the head of family:

    Tithes: http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp

    Griffith's: http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

    Best wishes

  • Chris,  I hope this is not too late....I have researched these ancestors, being descended from your Patrick's brother, Henry.  We share Patrick and Juiia Byrnes as  pioneer Australian ancestors, arriving on the Runnymede in 1841.

Hope to hear from you and I will try to get details to you.

    Patricia
