Looking for any info on Austin Welch (or Walsh). He also came from this parish to Marcellus, NY where my Coyne family also went to. Austin was born about 1812 and was married to Margaret O'Malley (Mealy. O'Mealy) in Ireland. They had three children before the John Benedict in about 1841, Gregory in about 1844 ands Michael in about 1846. Their next child was twins born in 1852 in Marcellus. NY so apparently immigrated during that period. THey had 8 more children in Marcellus
Austin and family lived in Marcellus until about 1868 when he left Marcellus for Iowa along with the family of Michael King English, also from Ireland, who was married to Honora O'Malley who we beleive may have been a sister to Austin's wife, Margaret.
AUstin died in Iowa on Sept 11, 1872and his wife on JUly 23,m 1872.
The possible connection to my family is my Tadgh "Tady" Coyne's mother was Ellen "Nellie" Welsh (or Walsh - both appear in Marcellus as Austin's last name. My "Tady" was born about 1834.so Austin could have been a brother to Tady's mother or her nephew.
ANy info is welcome.
Thanks

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
Unfortunately records for the parish do not begin until July 1869 - this means that there will be no church records available for anyone baptised or married in that parish prior to that time. Neither will there be any civil records as they did not begin until 1864.
It might be a good idea to keep an eye on the Early Birth and Marriage Index. It is updated regularly and if your ancestor doesn't appear now, they may in the future. In the meantime, I wanted to invite you to add your ancestor's details to our XO Chronicles. You can learn more about it HERE and it might be another avenue to consider so that your ancestor's details can be seen by others.
Best wishes

I’m wondering if there may still be relatives of my Lydon/Lyden family in Ballynakill or area.
As I’ve posted here my 2ndgreat grandparents were Tadgh “Tady” Coyne and Catherine Lydon (that spelling used in US). Their son John, my great grandfather was born there in 1858 and they came over to the US in 1862.
Catherine had a younger sister, Jane who married Thomas Thornton in 1869 and they and the Lydon parents (Patrick Lydon and Bridget Coyne) all came over in 1870.
There were at lest two siblings who remained in Ireland: brother, Michael and John Lyden. Don’t know much about Michael except he was the witness to the marriage of his sister, Jane and Thomas Thornton and he died between 1919 and 1929 as he’s mentioned in a sister in US’s obit and only John is in Jane Lydon Thornton’s obit in 1929.
I recently found records for John and family. John was born about 1842, probably in Moyard townland. He married Honor (Honora?) Corbett and they had 8 daughters: Bridget, Catherine, Mary Jane, Honor, Ellen, Margaret, Honor (2nd, first one died as a child) and Catherine (2nd).
John died June 13, 1936 in Ungwee, Ballynakill and wife Honor died February 24, 1933 also in Ungwee.
And grandchildren to John and Honor would likely not have the Lydon name but would love to hear if I have any cousins still there.wiccantank

As a starting point you could have a look at the online phone book to see if the family are mentioned today - be sure to check the residential tab: https://www.eirphonebook.ie/
You could take out a 24 hour subscription to rootsireland.ie and see what you can learn about marriage of any of the above children - the girls in particular as they would have likely married in their home parish. Irishgenealogy.ie has also recently released some of their civil records and these might also be of assistance.

Thanks, tried the phone book and found 74 "Lydons" in Galway. Doubt any of them would be descendants of John Lydon Since it seems he had only daughters but possibly related to the Michael who also stayed in Ireland.
I just wanted to post this info in case anyone related might be looking. I know Jane Lydon married Thomas THornton on Sept 5, 1869 in Ballinakill Chapel in Renvyle area shortly before they left for the US. I found the parish record a while ago listing brother Michael as witness. As you mention, sadly no records exist for my earlier family as mostly left for US before the year the records became available.
Thanks for the tips!wiccantank

If you get a copy of the civil certificate for Thomas Thornton’s marriage to Jane Lydon, it should contain her townland at the time of the marriage, which might prove helpful in terms of tracing forward to see who lived there later. Siblings perhaps? Marriage registered Clifden 1869 Volume 14, page 100.

Did your Austin Walsh have a sister Hannah who married Patrick Conroy? They also emigrated and landed in the Marcellus, NY area and were my 2nd ggrandparents.

'm not aware of them off the top of my head but I have a ton of Marcellus records since my Coyne and Lydons and related families lived there and it's only 8 miles from my house. In my tree I do have a Patrick Conroy who married a Mary Coyne in Marcellus but it's sort of an off side connected family. I'll check my records and see and get back to you.
Thanks. WOuldn't doubt there were more in the area!

Barb, checked my stuff and I found a Patrick Conroy married to an "Anna" in Marcellus. Anna could be a nickname for Hannah or a misinterpretation by the census taker. I've also found Hannah and Anna as mistakes for Honora. This shows Patrick born about 1837 in Ireland and immigrated in 1861 and Anna born about 1831 in Ireland. I show a son, Dennis, born about 1880 but oddly I only find the family in the 1900 and 1910 censuses in Marcellus. Could they have elsewhere before Marcellus?
Maybe they married in Marcellus before 1880 so I';ll look again for them individually. Many of the Irish immigrants in Marcellus were connected in some way because relative were there first and they had someone to help them adjust to the new country and there was a lot of work available there at the time. There were 15 at least mills of varied kinds running in what is still a very small village: linen, wood, paper, etc. Plus the woolen mills had a contract in early 1860's for the Union uniforms for the Civil War.
My Tady Coyne seems to be the last of his siblings to come over in March 1862.wiccantank

Barb. I checked the Marcellus censuses and found this Patrick Conroy with wife, Anne, in the 1865 NY State census listed as "Conrey", the 1870 Federal census as "Conray" and the 1880 Federal census as "Conry" Found they were buried in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Marcellus and the stone lists his wife as "Anna Haney" so probably not your family. They had 12 children: John born 1861 (died 1882 in Marcellus) in Ireland, Michael born 1863 in Marcellus (all the rest are born there also, Mary Ann, 1865, Patrick Thomas, 1866, Ellen 1868, Martin Henry 1870, Dennis, 1870 (died as infant), William James 1872, Edward 1877 and Dennis F. 1880 (the one I had seen in the 1900 census).
ANy names sound familiar?
Then in checking the Patrick Conroy I mentioned originally who married Mary Coyne in Marcellus, I found his brother, Daniel, married Mary Lydon, sister to my 2nd great grandmother and Patrick and Daniel's parents were Michael Conroy and NORA WELCH! "Nora" is often a mistake or nickname for Honora so could your 2nd great grandmother have been Honora?
These are the only Conroys I find in Marcellus. Would your Patrick and Hannah have originally come to Marcellus and then moved elsewhere?
I do find a couple Hannah Welchs in Marcellus but Welch is their married name. One married to Stephen Welch and the other to Thomas Welch. I also did find a Hannah married to a Patric Welch living in Manlius also in Onondaga Co.wiccantank

BArb, Today I found an obit for a Mrs. Hannah Conroy who died September 2, 1911 in Marcellus. IT says "Widow of Patrick Conroy, aged 92. Survived by five daughters, Mrs. J.C.Kennedy, Mrs William B. Hayes, and Miss Sarah Conroy all of Marcellus, Mrs. William McLaughlin of Fu0lton and Mrs. Mary Randall of Skaneateles.
IF this sounds like your Hannah, then Patrick died before 1911. I haven't found an obit for Patrick yet but found 2 or 3. One died in 1910-1911 but that only lists his survivors as his wife and one daughter Mrs. Charles Thorpe. There was also another Patrick who died in 1905-1907 (papers have no date on them) on Slate Hill Rd but I believe that to be the son of the Patrick Conroy I mentioned married to Mary Lydon who was fairly young. His young daughter was killed in Syracuse by a motorcycle driver and he went to his parents house to recuperate in Marcellus and died there shortly after.
IF your Conroys lived on Slate Hill Rd also that may be why I'm not finding them in the Marcellus census. Slate hill is at the top of the hill going into Marcellus so on the edge of the village. It was also extended far out of the village so in some censuses it's included in Marcellus and others it is not. I know my Tady Coyne's sister and family, Sarah Gannon, also lived there and they often don't appear in Marcellus censuses.
The obit for Hannah says she was buried in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in the village.
IF any of the names in the obit sound like your family, you can also write me directly at wiccantank@netscape.com and I'd be glad to send the obit to you. Hope this helps.
OH and I also found a real estate listing in 1882 in which a Bridget Welch sold land to a Patrick Conroy in Marcellus.

Barb,
I found a tree on Ancestry for this family owned by a Barb and wondered if it ws you also. I wrote to her but haven’t heard anything back. So..
From the St. Francis Xavier (nicknamed SFX) church records I found Patrick Conry/Conroy died on June 5, 1902, aged 93, of cancer. He was born in
1910. He married Hannah Walsh (Welch) in Ireland about 1847. They immigrated in 1855 with three children. Her parents likely John Welch and Mary Mullen. Hannah 1819-Sept. 2, 1911. Then I discovered they are both listed on findagrave.com for their burials. Still haven’t found an obit for Patrick but the burial records show he and Hannah are there.
Mary (born Ireland) 1848-1943 married Henry Randall 1847-1911 on 26 April 1868 in SFX church. They had at least two children. They are buried St. Mary's Skaneateles, NY
Catherine (Born Ireland) 1851-1920 married John C. Kennedy1846-1913 on 15 Dec. 1874 in SFX church. They became parents of seven children. They are buried SFX cemetery in Marcellus
Anna 1854-1942 married William B. McLaughlin 1853-1914 by whom she had a number of children, all of who died in infancy or as youngsters. They and their children buried St. Mary's Cemetery, Skaneateles, NY
After immigrating and settling in Marcellus, six more children were born to them, baptized in St. Francis Xavier church. In 1900 census Hannah Walsh Conroy lists herself as mother of 9 children with 4 still living.
Patrick 1857-1858 probably died as a infant
Sarah 1858-1937 did not marry and is buried at SFX cemetery
Margaret or Mary b. 1860 Appears as “Mary” in 1900 census aged 40 living with parents in Marcellus. Possibly her name was Margaret Mary as she had a living sister Mary Randall
Ellen 1861-1862, no doubt died as infant (name was reused for next child which was common.)
Ellen 1863-1955 married William B. Hayes 1862-1940 on 25 Nov. 1891 in SFX church
They had at least four children. They are buried at SFX cemetery
Julia born 186?-1866 died as a infant
Now to relations: The last name appears to have been Welch in Ireland but often translated as “Walsh” in the US. I’ve mentioned Austin Welch and his wife Margaret O’Malley were godparents to my Tady Coyne’s first daughter born in US and in the SFX baptism record they’re listed as “Walsh”
Also don’t know if I mentioned but on Tady’s death cert his mother is listed as “Ellen “Nellie” Welch” So with Austin and your Conroys with Welch connection here before Tady came over in 1862 (he did have 2 brothers and a sister here before him also) but there does seem to be a connection. Tady was born in 1834 in Ballynakill Galway so would guess Austin and Hannah were connected. Also the fact Patrick and Hannah had two daughters named “Ellen” may be important, given the Irish tradition of naming children after family members.. I’m guessing they were, at least cousins or possibly Hannah and Austin were aunt and uncle to Tady and possibly siblings to his mother. The Irish tended to stay together. Hope this helps.wiccantank

Yes, that was me on Ancestry. Sorry but I haven't had a chance to get back here.
You have my Patrick and Hannah, I agree that there is some connections. I also have a Coyne in my match list on FamilyTreeDNA I just haven't had time to do much with it. My aunt gave me a pedigree chart of the family tree back to Rodger Conroy but it is not complete in all lines. And it includes "John Sullivan married to Mary born in Ireland"- no wonder I don't have facts to fit people into. Our connection (as tenuous as it is) seems to confirm the location.
-
Since I wrote I discovered that I had Austin's patents as John Welch and Mary Mullen so if That info is correct then your Hannah and Austin WERE brother and sister. Austin and his wife both died in 1872 in Iowa only 4 years after they left marcellus

Just thought we've never talked about the area in Ireland they came from. I'm pretty sure your Patrick and Hannah came from the same civil parish in western Galway as most of the families in Marcellus. IT is called Ballynakill (in Gaelic Baile Na Cille). It's in the Connemara area of Galway and is a small parish that surrounds Ballynakill Harbor. My grandfather (who was raised by his grandparents Tady and Catherine (Lydon) Coyne) said Tady used to say they were 'so far west in Ireland that the next parish over was America" Most all in this area spoke gaelic and I know Tady and Catherine did as my grandfather said they'd revert to it when they didn't want the kids to know what they were saying.
Ballynakill is a small parish only 10km long (about 6.2 miles but before the famine was a very populated place.
I found a book written by church group in the parish that has a lot of useful info. One page has a list of "occupies of houses in 1855" (no one owned land there especially since most were Catholic so basically lepers to the British. They all rented houses and/or farm land.
The book lists 13 families with the varied names of Conroy/Conry/Conrey and 6 with the Walsh/Welch name. For my family there are 34 Coyne families and 18 Lydon families. They lived in different townlands (a collection of houses along a road sort of what we call a neighborhood and that was the closest to an address.
The official location would be the County of Galway, Barony of Ballynahinch, Union of Clifden, Parish of Ballynakill and then whatever townland they lived in.
Marcellus seems to have been Galway central as word got back to Ireland, all their families and friends came over and settled there. IN face SFX church was built to accommodate the Irish Catholics who had flooded into Marcellus.
I figured this out several years ago from Griffith valuations records. I was able to triangulate my families as my Coynes married into Lydon and Gannon families and one of my 2nd great grandmother Lydon's sisters married a Thornton and I knew they had married in Ballinakill (diff spelling) Chapel in the Renvyle area and they all are in Ballynakill. Plus Tady's brothers who came over before him had married names in the same parish. His brother Patrick married a Gannon, as did their sister Sarah and his brother Rodger married another Coyne.
I think most everyone I've researched in Marcellus traces back to the same area so pretty safe to say it's likely that's where Patrick and Hannah came from also.wiccantank

I am planning a trip to IReland for this June. I arrive at shannon morning of June 21st and will be driving to Galway. staying very near Paddy Coyne's pub in Renvuyle, Ballynakill, Galway. Staying there for 4 nights then going east to Armagh to visit a Coyne cousin.
IF anyone knows any contacts for Coyne, Lydon/Lyden, Gannon, Welch/Walsh or Thornton families in Ballynakill I'd love to know if anyone around who is good on families histories.
My 3rd great grandparents were john Coyne and Ellen "Nellie" Welch/Walsh. Their son "Tady" (called that in the US) married Catherine Lydon and their daughter sarah married Philip Gannon. Tady also had brothers Patrick and Rodger who also came to Marcellus NY. PAtrick married a Mary Coyne and Rodger Ann Gannon, sister to Philip.
Catherine Lydon Coyne's sister Jane married Thomas THornton at Ballinakill chapel (is that still around?) in Renvyle in 1869 before they and Jane's parents came to Marcellus.Thomas was from Letterfreck. There may still be living Lydon/Lyden connections living there. Jane and Cathertine had two brothers who stayed in Ireland and had families. A kind person on this site found the baptism records for John's family. He was married to Honor Corbett and died in 1936 in Ungwee. ITyappears he had all daugfhters so some descendents may not be named Lydon..
Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Hello - I just saw this message today when I was looking for more information about my great grandfather. My great-grandfather was Michael Austin Walsh, he was born in the parish of Renvyle.
-
Don't know if relevant but i have I n my tree a Michael Welch/ Walsh , son of the Austin Welch/ Walsh and Margaret o'malley that i mentioned above born Sept 28, 1847 .
Don't have a middle name but with his father's name is possible it could be austin.
I show this michael dying in 1911 in Stanbury, Missouri and married to a Julia A._____.
Renvyle is an area of Ballynakill parish north of ballynakill harbor not the name of the parish.
Austin and Margaret settled in Marcellus NY where my family also lived and in 1868 they moved to Temple Hills Iowa along with the family of michael King English (who they'd also come over from ireland together. Austin died there on sept 11, 1872 and his wife Margaret just before him on July 23 1872.
You can find their grave memorials on findagrave. com buried in iowa.
Michael King English and his wife Honora O'malley (, sister to Austin's wife) are buried in three same cemetery.
if this is your great grandfather, od'd love to hear!

Also if this is your family, Austin came over with his wife and brother Stephen Walsh in 1851. A sister Hannah came over in 1855 to Marcellus and married Patrick Conroy there. Stephen married oddly a hannah Conroy.
Ive had a match to z descendant of Stephen Walsh so thinking this might prove my theory of Austin being related to my 2nd great grandfather's mother as i mentioned above.wiccantank

Oh, I am sorry, I reversed and typed his name wrong... My great-grandfathers name is Austin Michael Walsh.

i'll check my tree but i think Austin also had a son Austin also.

I am a descendant of Patrick Walsh's (who was hanged in Sep 1882 ) sister , Mary. She was was my 2x great grandmother. Honora,Patrick and Michael's mother (who was a widow by 1878 after Stephen Walsh died) moved to Chicago in 1886. I would like to connect more with any potential family.

Tying in a few of my posts, I've since found a DNA match to a descendant of Stephen Welch/ Walsh who came over with his brother Austin Welch and Austin's wife Margaret O'Malley in 1851 aboard the ship Doctor Kress arriving may 4, 1851. They settled in Marcellus, NY. Stephen then married a Hannah Conroy in Marcellus. They also had a sister Hannah Welch who married a posturing
Patrick Conroy in marvelous
MARCELLUS.
also had a recent DNA match to a lydon who is son of the family who runs the Maol Reidh hotel in Tullycross and where we stayed when we visited a couple years ago. Wish I'd known our connection when we were there.
ODDLY to a recent new Coyne DNA match to a woman whose father lives in Ballynakill and she knows my lydon match also (at hotel!)
MY 2nd great grandparents came from that area, Tadgh "Tady" Coyne and wife Catherine Lydon.
I think the Welch dna match proves my theory that the Austin Welch in Marcellus was connected to my Tady. TADY and Catherine picked Austin and wife Margaret to be godparents to their first child born in USA only 5 months after they arrived when they both had siblings in village so they're had to be a strong connection.
Oh yes and the Hannah Welch / Walsh married to Patrick Conroy was another sister.wiccantank
