Wondering if there are any Turley relatives still living in Ireland. My grandfather emigrated to the US in the early 1900's and resided in Manhattan, NY where he eventually met and married my grandmother, Catherine Scanlon b 1886. I found a copy of their marriiage license stating they married on 26 April 1914.
My great-grandfather was James Turley b 1869 and married to Bridgit Guinan on 23 June 1884 there in Ballinasloe, Galway.
I cannot find any other information on my family and wonder if anyone knows more information to help me out.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
I located the civil birth record on June 16th 1889. See first link. You will have to sign in. I also found the 1901 census record for the family and the mother Bridget had just died post child birth. See link for death record. I could not find the family in the 1911 census. The last link is to the online Irish phone book. Use the Residential TAB There are Turleys near Ballinasloe.

You may want to add an Ireland XO Chronicle article about your grandfather.

Hi TurleyScanlon,
My great-grandfather was also James Turley, married to Bridget Guinan. My grandfather Michael (later called Frank) was your grandfathers younger brother. They were about 7 years apart in age.
My grandfather also came to the States, residing in NYC and then on Long Island. He had two children, one of which was my father, also named Frank.
I don't have any information to answer your post here, but I just couldn't give up the chance to say hello to a fairly close relative!
All the best,
Lizzie Turley Doubleday -
Hi Lizzie,
Thank you so much for your reply cause I am having so much trouble finding siblings to my grandparents, great grandparents, etc and am wondering how many of the Turley's in the US are related. It is so nice to meet you! I have found my grandmother's sister on the Scanlon side but the Turley side doesn't help much since I really don't know much of their history. I am so very curious about my Irish roots. I currently live in New England but am moving to a place that has tons of Irishm a redheads club, and an Irish Festival every August so hopefully I can find more about all my relatives. Can you tell me anything about your side of the Turley's? Who did your grandfather marry? The names of his children? I can try to answer any questions you may have about my line too.

Hi, just to let you know that the names Turley and Guinan are common in the Parish of Moore, Co Roscommon, which is very close to Ballinasloe so you could have a look there too.

Hi Kathy,
So nice to meet you too!
I can tell you what I've learned about my grandfather and his siblings so far. I have no idea how many of the Turley's in the US are related to each other/us. Where I am from it is a very uncommon last name....I only know of one other Turley family in the whole area. There are many Turley's in the southern states, but rare in MA.
My grandfather was one of 8 children. As you know, James Turley married Bridget Guinan. They lived in Gannaveen (Lismany) Galway. Their children were:
(original Irish names)
Mary - b.1886
Patrick - b.1887
John - b.1889
Delia - b.1892
James - b.1895
Michael - b.1896
Margaret - b.1898
Helena - b.1900
I believe Bridget Guinan died shortly (hours?) after Helena's birth. The 1901 censes lists a Bridget Guinan as Mother-in-Law to Head of Household. I think she must have helped take care of the children.
The oldest daughter, Mary, is said to have changed all the siblings names as they sounded "too Irish" and some were planning on heading to the States. My grandfather's (Michael) name was changed to Francis John, and he went by Frank. I think Patrick's was changed to Joseph. I can't remember the others. My Aunt (father's sister) once wrote me a letter with each "new" name but I can't find that at the moment. My grandfather came to New York in 1910 when he was 14. I think he and sister Margaret made the trip together. He may or may not have finished school here. I know he was a Union carpenter and worked in hotel construction in Manhattan. He married my grandmother, Mary Cahill, originally from Tipperary. She had come over as a young girl with her family. They lived in Wantagh, Long Island NY and had two children, my aunt Patricia and my father Francis John Jr. My Aunt Pat had 3 children, Maureen, Kathleen and Michael. My parents had two children, my brother Michael and me. I have one son, John Francis who we call Jack. I named him for my father, who passed away when I was 11.
That's about all I know! My aunt Pat has passed, but I stay in touch with her children on Facebook. I could find some other details from them.
I hope this helps!

Lizzie, every little bit of information I get about family thrills me to pieces as I am very curious. My dad's brother, John who died at the age of 92 last year, gave my youngest brother the Book of Turley but my little bro won't share. He has been over to Ireland about 6 or 7 times so far.
Let me fill in my lineof the family for you: I found the birth records for all the children Great Grandpa James had. I found the death certificate of GG Bridgit who died in 1900 6 days after giving birth to Helena. My grandfather also emigrated to the US around the same time your grandfather and our great-aunt did. He lived around Manhattan and eventually met and married my grandmother, Catherine Scanlon, born in County Sligo who emigrated earlier than 1910 - she was sent to a convent in NJ but became sick and couldn't take her vows. They eventually settled in Danbury, CT where they owned a corner store. Gram had about 5 stillborns but finally gave birth to Anne 1920, John 1923 and my dad Joseph Leo 1926. Anne never had any children but was married and divorced from Jack Heffernan, a nurse. John married Mildred Sposato and they lived in Huntington, LI, NY where they raised 2 daughters, Laureen 1949 and Leslie 1951 Laureen married a Michael Flynn and they had Adam and Peter and eventually moved to near Roswell, GA.. They do not keep in touch with us. Leslie is married to a lawyer John Conly and had resided in RI. My dad married Dorothy Pohlman from East Haven, CT in 1948 and she came from a family that had 2 sets of twins my mom being the younger set. I was born in 1949, Marilynn was born in 1950, Thomas was born in 1952 and died in 2007, and Brian in 1967, just ibe week before I graduated from High School. Marilynn had 1 daughter, Tom and his wife Sandi had a son and daughter, Brian does not have any children, and I have 3 daughters, Tina, Tracey and Bethany. By now you are probably very confused, lol, and so I think I better stop for now. I look forward to getting to know more about you and our family.

Hi Hermione,
I am pretty new to this genealogy thing but have always been curious about where the family came from. None of my graqndparents, parents, aunts and uncles are living so I can't get more information from them. Before I started searching all I knew was my grandparents both were born in Ireland so that's where I started out my search. My grandmother came to the States as a young lady and was to join a convent in NJ until she got very sick and had to leave befrore taking her vows. Thank you for your information and I will definitely follow those leads.
