I am looking for my ancestors in Galway.  Would like to know the dates and ship of immigration.  Would like more family history, I'd like to find birth & marriage records for John Faherty & his Father Morgan.

My name is Flaherty, but we believe the family name might have been Faherty in Ireland.

John Faherty & Margaret Wallace

John A. Faherty

 m.  16 Jan 1865  Ballynakill Parish, Renoyle, Clifden, County Galway, Ireland

 * Age 25 when married in 1865
 * John was living in Glassillaun, County Galway, Ireland when married in 1865.

Margaret Wallace
 b.  1840 – 1850 ?
 m.  16 Jan 1865
Ballynakill Parish, Renoyle, Clifden, County Galway, Ireland

* Living in Dawros More, County Galway, Ireland which is a part of Letterfrack when married in 1865
* Her father was Peter Wallace, a farmer
  Her grandfather was William Wallace

Children of  John & Margaret Faherty:

  Anne      10 Jun 1876
Kate      26 Nov 1880 (Katherine?)  Immigration Yr: 1892
  Stephen   01 Dec 1882
  Margaret  04 Oct 1886

Notes and Comments:
* Came to America about 1890? ? just speculation
* Stephen carried Margaret off the ship because she did not have shoes.
* Bridget and Anne stayed in Galway (presume already married?)
* It may be that the children came to America, and then the parents (John & Margaret) followed later?

Morgan Faherty & Unknown <== Father of John Faherty

Morgan Faherty
  b.   about  1815 County Galway, Ireland
based on his son John being 25 when married in 1865

Notes and Comments:
* All that we know about Morgan is that he is listed as the father on his son’s marriage record in 1865.

It will be difficult to find records for your family. Civil registration started in Ireland in 1864 and RC church records for the Letterfrack area do not start until around 1869.

I also looked at the 1856 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Ballynakill civil parish. There were an equal number of Flaherty and Faherty entries but no Morgan. Either he was deceased or his holding was small and he was sub-leasing from another tenant farmer.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Roger,

Thank you for taking the time to answer my query.  I really appreciate your efforts in checking your records.

I was hoping for an answers to my questions, and you gave me that answer.  It may not be the answer that I wanted, but it does pretty well settle my concerns about obtaining all the information that I can about my family.

    Again, thank you very much.

    Regards,

    Ed Flaherty

  • Since I have a Faherty/Flaherty ancestor, I am curious - where did your family settle in USA?  My Flaherty/King/Gallaghers settled in Pittsburgh.
