  • Hi,

I'm James Manto, a 20-year-old from London and the grandson of a Galway Irish immigrant to the UK. I've been fascinated with genealogy for a few years now and have found a lot about my relations to the Manto family in Galway. I would love to know more so if anyone reading this has absolutely any information about the branches of the Manto family then email me at james.manto@hotmail.com. I've been building a family tree and it's rather large on my English branch (1600s) but can only get back to my great great grandparents, Patrick and Ellen Manto (born 1860s), on my Irish side.

    Thanks!

  • Hi James, I'm Michael, son of Margaret Theresa Manto (married surname Thatcher) born 1915 in or around Ardrahan/Gort area of County Galway.  We have found that our mother moved to the UK around 1923 and changed her surname to Manton but we have found her real surname was Manto from research of gravestones around the Ardrahan & Gort area's. It has always puzzled our family why she would alter her name but we have found that pressure was being put on families in that area to support the IRA. I believe that our Grandfather was also called Patrick but would suggest that our G/father would be older than yours. Hope this info is help to you in your reserch. Regards, Mike

  • Thank you for the reply Mike. We must be related in some way then! It could be possible that my g.g. grandparents Patrick and Ellen had a daughter (your mother?) in 1915 as my records say they had 10 children between 1892 and 1911. They could have had more after 1911 when the last surviving census I can find was taken, although Ellen would've been 48 in 1915. On the other hand, one of Patrick and Ellen's earlier children could have had your mother, as their eldest, Michael, would have been 23 in 1915.

I don't know if any of this is helping but the link between us must be there somewhere! Me and my family really want to expand our knowledge of the Mantos and eventually get further back to find the origins of the surname. Manto is a Sicilian name but we have no clue of any Italian ancestors yet.

    Regards, James

  • Hi Mike.

I've done a bit more looking and it looks like you posted something on Ancestry.com saying your mother had siblings called Mary, Bridget, Richard and Edward. They are four of the ten children of Patrick and Ellen I talked about in my last post! Meaning your mother's parents were my great great grand parents, Patrick and Ellen! I've added your mother to my family tree on Ancestry.

The rest of your mother's siblings (that I know of) are called Michael, Martin, Thomas, John, Peter and Patrick (my great grandad).

If you want to know more then just ask, and if you have more info then please share. Thanks!

    James

  • Hi James, Thanks for your last email, it made an interesting read,we didn't know some of the names of our mothers siblings so we can now add them to our possible relatives. I remembered that I was contacted by a John Manto in 2008 regarding some living relatives, some still in Ireland, and have managed to find his letter so I will attach it to this post together with some old photo's of our Grandad & Grandma. Have you got access to our family tree on Ancestry.com? would you allow us access to your tree? I think it would be beneficial to both of us to make the link between our branches. Just tried to upload 3 files to you but website will not allow so I will send direct to your email address

    Best Regards, Mike

  • Hi all,

I'm Jonathan Manto, the younger brother of James who sadly passed away last year and I was wondering if miket23 could possibly email me the files that he sent James, as I have taken the liberty of further completing the family tree to honour my late brother and would love to have some information about my family and my Irish heritage which was so important to him.

    Le meas,

    Jonathan

P.S. We have since come to the belief that the Manto family in Galway probably aren't descended from any Italian root, but most likely come from Viking ancestry. Manto was a spelling variation (alongside Manton, Manseon and Mansoun) of a Viking forename that derived from Magnus, and in Viking invasions in Scotland and Ireland, forenames (as Vikings didn't have inherited surnames) became the surnames of their children.

  • Hi Jonathan, Condolences to you and your family for the passing away of James, life is so cruel.

With regards to any info I had sent to James unfortunately I no longer have it as it was on my PC which annoyingly crashed with the loss of everything. I will however try to retrieve any photo's and info from my brother who may still have records. Have you tried to access our family tree on Ancestry.com? (Kevin Thatcher & Michael Thatcher) there may be some info on there which may be relevant to your search.

I must admit the link to Viking ancestry has perplexed me a bit as this has never been mentioned in any searching we have done, but there has always been strong links to Italian decent backed up by info from our Irish cousins and other relatives, please feel free to contact me again in case I can help in your family history searches.

    Best regards, Mike Thatcher

  • My name is Danielle Elizabeth Manton. Born in Watertown, NY. My father is George Francis Manton Sr, born in Syracuse, NY. My grandfather is Donald Manton (married Mary Elizabeth Hoffman), his mother was a Dougherty. All I know about her is that she was "lace curtain irish" and, owned a magnificent fur coat. Donald Manton was in the Navy and a butcher. Never wore jeans and always a tie. I believe his father owned the first grocery store in the Irish section in Syracuse (Tipperary Hill). To this day, they still have a main street light that has a green light over the red. I'm told that, it's because that's how it was done in Ireland. And the neighborhood kids would throw rocks to smash the lights out, until it was set that way.

  • Hi all, I'm married to Manto in Galway. Doing some research and would love any information you have found on them, especially where they originated from. We are led to believe they came from Italy, Sicily. I have 2 sons so the manto surname will continue on in Galway. Look forward to hearing from you. If I can help with any queries you may have don't hesitate to contact me
