I am researching my husband's Brennan family who left County Mayo around 1826 and arrived in Australia around 1828.  Peter Brennan was born about 1799, his wife was Bridget Barrett and they had a son, also Peter Brennan born in Co Mayo in 1825.  Peter Brennan (born 1799) joined the 39th Regiment in Castlebar in 1818, registering as being from Addergoole.  He also had a brother Thomas in the same regiment.  Their mother was Mary from Addergoole.
I have found a John Brennan in Bofeenaun who has been trying to help me.  His family is from Addergoole as far as he is aware, but he doesn't know where his grandfather, Edward, was born as the priest couldn't find the information in the local church book.  John asked his grandfather's elderly friends and they said they weren't aware that he was from any other place.  His grandfather's name is Edward Brennan and is is listed in the 1901 census as being 47.   In the 1901 census, residents of a house 8 in Massbrook, Lower Addergoole were:

Brennan Edward 47 Head of family
Brennan Mary 40 Wife
Brennan Kate 15 daughter
Brennan Anne 13 daughter
Brennan John 11 son
Brennan James 9 son
Brennan Edward 7
Brennan Patrick 2 (the father of the abovementioned John Brennan, presently residing in Massbrook, Boffeenaun.

We are trying to see if Edward Brennan's parents are perhaps John Brennan and Bridget Corrigan who had a daughter in 1842 whose name wa also Bridget.  These details were in the Lahradane Church Book.
Is anyone able to help with the Birth Record of the above Edward Brennan born about 1854.

Any assistance would be very much appreciated.

Kind Regards

I looked at the Roots Ireland indexes and found three baptismal records in Mayo for an Edward Brennan. One in 1838, 1857 and 1858. None were in Addergoole RC parish. Likely none are for your Edward. NOTE Edward increase his age to 63 in the 1911 census which would mean a year of birth around 1847.

I did find an index record for an 1884 marriage for a Edward Brennan in the Addergoole RC records. His spouse was Maria. I could not determine her maiden name. The father and mother for this Edward were John and Bridget. Possibly this is your ancestor.

Roots is a pay site and they now require a subscription to see their records.

If you can wait, the National Library plans to have the parish registers online for free searching sometime in the summer of 2015. At that point you can search the Addergoole records yourself.

  • Hi Roger,

Thank you very much for your reply. What I had been trying to establish was if the current Brennan family living in the Addergoole Parish could be related to the earlier Brennan's in the area, some of whom departed for Australia. From the information you have provided it does seem a possibility that the John Brennan who has been assisting me is the descendant of the John and Bridget who are registered as having a child in 1842,the earliest record we have of Brennan's in the Addergoole Parish. My thoughts had been that it may be possible to research the ancestry of someone who hasn't moved from the area but according to the current John Brennan who has corresponded with me by mail, that is very difficult because of the lost church records.

I will look forward to being able to search the records online in 2015. Thank you very much for that information also.

If you have any other suggestions for researching our earlier Brennans and Barrett (information is in an earlier post), they would be greatly appreciated.

    Kind Regards

    Marlene Brennan
